Chris Carrier announces his candidacy; sends Helena Guergis a note

COLLINGWOOD Chris Carrier ended several weeks of speculation early Thursday, announcing he will seek the nomination to be the Conservative candidate in Simcoe-Grey.

Carrier, who was elected mayor of Collingwood in 2006, following three terms as a councillor, had been considering his political future for some time especially following the closure of T.D. Snow, a company in which he was a minority shareholder.

There had been speculation earlier this week that Carrier was poised to announce his candidacy for the Conservative nomination it was just a question of when.

It means Collingwood will have a new mayor on October 25; thus far, Deputy-mayor Sandra Cooper, Councillor Kathy Jeffery, and local resident Raymond Branget have filed to run for the position.

Two other people have signalled their interest in the race to replace Helena Guergis as the Conservative candidate in the riding:local financial planner Cam Ecclestone, and Sick Kids orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kellie Leitch.

Carrier issued a news release early Thursday.

In the release, Carrier stated he informed Guergis of his intention to run as a candidate, and thanked her for her work as a Member of Parliament.

Guergis, who was first elected in 2004, was turfed from the Conservative caucus in April and now sits as an Independent. Guergis has repeatedly stated that if she were not allowed back into caucus that she would run as an Independent candidate.

"I am grateful for what Ms. Guergis has done for our riding over the past years," said Carrier. "I intend to continue and build upon all of the best work that has been done in this riding as a member of the Conservative Party caucus."

A date has not yet been set for a nomination meeting.
