| I hope they cancel AIDS Week because it's a disease that doesn't affect a "diverse" population. |

It sounds like this was a student driven decision rather than admin... Wow...

Shinerama has traditionally been a part of both Carleton's and U Ottawa's frosh weeks. Each faculty is assigned to stand at a certain location in Ottawa (i.e. my freshman year we were at Smyth/Alta Vista) and take donations, and many drivers in the area are quite familiar with it and donate.
This decision by CUSA is mind boggling, but I have ceased to be surprised by student feds. Certainly, choosing to donate to another charity is perfectly acceptable, but why they had to add that part about their rationale is beyond me. |

| Maybe they'll siphon off the money to the Liberal Party. They could definitely use some spare change. |

Virtually any disease, when you analyze epidemiology statistics, is more prevalent in certain age, sex, or ethnic groups.
Even cancer, which is primarily a disease of the elderly. IIRC, it's something like 75% of new diagnosis (the incidence) is people over the age of 60, and this is usually mirrored when you break down the numbers by cancer type. |

Apparently, the Carlton University Students Association is having second thoughts. Between the media storm and having the president of Carlton criticizing them, it appears they've decided discretion is the better part of valour.

| Hey, the simple fact is they can raise money, or not raise money, for whomever they wish. I also have a choice as to where to send the children off to post secondary, and whether or not I donate to the old alma mater. Not that Carleton is my alma mater, or that anyone would admit if it was... |

| As the HRC has claimed in the recent past Chrisitans can not be discriminated against because they are not in their nature to be as sensitive as other cultures & religions. |

I think it is more of the reason as to why they chose to no longer raise money for cystic fibrosis. I don't think that this would be an issue if they just moved on. |

pppsssshhhh
if aids had hit any other group besides gay men in the early 1980's we would not have the massive aids problem we do today in north america.
If legionnaires disease hit homos it wouldnt have gotten much funding and if aids had hit cute war vets it would have gotten tons of funding. :(
If you dont think that aids is the problem it is because of discrimation then you need to do some research. :?
And I always thought it was funny that WLU which is such a white school started something for CF. Not that they shouldnt, but its funny. |

| AIDS was raping the Africa for years and no one cared. Only when it came to North America, and affecting the gay community, only then did it become the fashionable thing to do. |

| There's a point there, actually. I doubt a lot of people even really knew it existed until then. |

Spare me your tears. AIDS gets more funding for research than heart disease and breast cancer combined. It gets 40 times the funding that cystic fibrosis gets. It gets 3 times the funding that diabetes receives. Quit spreading false information based on your emotions rather than fact.
