The National Citizens Coalition says in light of an Ontario court ruling, the federal government should scrap all public subsidies for political parties.
“Yesterday an Ontario judge ruled an electoral law which gave major political parties (those which received more than 2% if the national popular vote) public subsidies was unconstitutional because it discriminated against smaller parties which did not receive a subsidy,” says NCC vice president Gerry Nicholls. “So now smaller, fringe parties will also receive tax dollars.”
Nicholls says while that is good news for smaller parties, it’s not good news for taxpayers or for democracy.
“This law is nothing but a welfare plan for politicians,” says Nicholls. “Taxpayers should not be forced to finance political parties – large or small. That’s wrong and it’s a waste of tax dollars.”
Nicholls points out that thanks to the Ontario court ruling, the Christian Heritage Party, the Communist Party, the Marijuana Party will all now receive public funds.
“A fairer system would be to scrap this `Welfare for Politicians Plan’ altogether,” says Nicholls. “Let parties collect money from people who wish to voluntarily contribute.”
