HALIFAX -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit Nova Scotia next week to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay confirmed Friday that Rice will spend Monday in Halifax and then travel to his riding in Pictou County on Tuesday.
MacKay said he and Rice had discussed the possibility of her coming to Nova Scotia since they first met.
"The fifth year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy seemed an appropriate occasion," said MacKay.
"Ms. Rice had indicated in a very personal way that she would like to come to Atlantic Canada and express appreciation and gratitude on behalf of the American people."
Monday marks the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the U.S.
Nova Scotians played host to thousands of stranded American travellers whose flights were forced to land in Halifax.
Rice is expected to attend an event at Halifax International Airport to mark the anniversary.
MacKay said he also planned to discuss a number of issues during the visit, including trade, North American security and foreign policy issues involving the Middle East and Afghanistan. |

| She'll be spending the nite about 15 minutes from my place. Biggest thing to happen to this little town in my life. |
