Nations Approve Landmark Climate Accord in Paris
LE BOURGET, France — Representatives of 195 countries reached a landmark climate accord on Saturday that will, for the first time, commit nearly every country to lowering planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to help stave off the most drastic effects of climate change.
Delegates who have been negotiating intensely in this Paris suburb for two weeks gathered for the final plenary session, where suddenly, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius of France asked for opposition to the deal and, hearing none, gaveled the session closed.
With that, the delegates achieved what had been unreachable for two decades: a consensus on the need to move away from carbon-based fuels and a plan for the 195 nations to do so.
Though the final deal did not achieve all that environmentalists, scientists and some countries had hoped for, it set the table for further efforts to slow down the slide toward an unlivable planet.
In the end, it was an extraordinary effort at international diplomacy. Supporters of a deal argued that no less than the future of the planet was at stake, and in the days leading up to the final session, they worked relentlessly to push skeptical nations to join their ranks.
O, sweet Jesus!
Think on this ... they don't tell us much about it, but almost certainly the biggest polluter and the third biggest polluters -- China and India -- won't be aboard on this bit of mass delusion.
In fact, the reader is invited to pop some corks, so to speak, but there are no details.
Know this: the historical record for temperatures, prior to 1880, is a constructed figure that 'massages' data from sources like tree rings, and glacier cores. It is not possible to get data of the kind of accuracy they claim -- down to a tenth of a degree -- from that.
The stated goals -- a 2 degree celsius lowering of temperature, for example -- are entirely arbitrary, and are not scientifically derived. It is a political agenda rather than a scientific goal. The scientific models give a range of temperatures rather than a specific one.
Equally, the $100 billion a year countries are supposed to pony up is an entirely aribrary figure. It emerged at Copenhagen, and is entirely arbitrary.
There is also the embarrassing fact that there has been no increase in global temperatures, according to NASA, which uses actual measurments of atmospheric heat gathered by satellites.
There are 2440 new coal-fired generation plans on stream now, in China and India, and elsewhere. Even without new construction, emissions from existing coal-fired plants is expected to increase 150% higher than the goals that would be necessary to achieve a 2 degree celsius temperature reduction
The conference itself is estimated to have created 330,000 tons of CO2 just flying the bureaurats to Paris, and home again. Although that estimate probably calculated before Justin decided to make a party of out of it, and load up three 747's for his staff and friends and hanger-ons.
