Hockey pays for half of the CBC's budget and the NHL contact is coming up for negotiation. Rumours are the contract will triple in value. No way CBC can afford it.

| Quote: | | CBC is left to compete against well-capitalized communications giants that can amortize rights purchases and talent raids against their cellphone or cable TV businesses. Plus, the federally subsidized broadcaster is finding it hard to justify to the Conservative government using tax money to take assets from the private side. The CBC talks brave, but the clock is running on its traditional model of having Hockey Night underwrite its other operations |
This will be the end of the CBC. If they think the Conservatives will increase their subsidy so they can pay more for hockey rights they are out of their minds. Screw all the lefty biased reporters and talking heads. They won't be able to get a job this side of Moscow(and even Putin's in trouble there). No talents like Solomon and Stombolopoulos(whatever) will be washing cars. I hope CTV picks up the At Issue panel and Rex Murphy.
Then at least Coyne can show if he is really a closet conservative. |

| Most of what we see on CTV and Global is foreign. Without the CBC there would have been no DaVinci's Inquest, Intelligence, Republic of Doyle, As It Happens, Quirks and Quarks, The Nature of Things, Peter Kent, Friendly Giant, Morningside, Cross-Country Check-up, and 2/3 of the foreign correspondents on the othe Canadian and American news programs. CBC has a mandate to provide programming to a full spectrum of the Canadian population. That means the programs you may not want to watch are being enjoyed by others. The CBC provides us with programming that private broadcasters won't. Show me a private broadcaster that presents a Quirks and Quarks or the Nature of things. We are a large and varied country. Quality educational programming is not commercially viable using the PBS model. That's why the Conservatives created the CBC. |

| The Conservatives would face a huge backlash if the tried to privatize the CBC. If they want to campaign on it in the next election. |

I think I agree with mrsocko. If they lose NHL rights in 2014, which is a distinct possibility, that's going to seriously impact their business model. CBC Radio will have to start selling advertising. They may even have to shut down one or two of the three CBC Radio stations. Yes, there's CBC Radio One, Two, and Three. Bye bye script writers and other CBC positions that don't exist (or exist in small numbers) in the private broadcasting world.
Losing NHL rights alone would force a pretty serious downsizing of the CBC, without any political agenda helping it along. CBC has already lost the CFL, Olympics, MLB, Curling, etc. The NHL is the only major sports entity they have left.
I've actually hoped for TSN/CTV or Rogers to outbid them for quite sometime. I don't think NHL hockey counts as being part of the core mandate of the CBC. Not to mention, TSN or (maybe) Sportsnet would do a better job, and they'd definitely hire the talent that was worth using - like Ron MacLean and Don Cherry. |

History channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, CTV and CTV News Channel all offer similar programing and without the lefty bias.
CBC is redundant and myopic. |

| Most importantly, CBC is the only Canadian network that gives us Coronation Street. :D |

CBC has nothing going for it and should be depleted of its funding.
Their acting just like the Natives - expecting Harper and the government to pay the bills on the Canadian taxpayers' dime.
Their mantra; "Just bring you check book Mr. Harper!"
Cut these parasites adrift I say. |
