OTTAWA - NDP MP and deputy Speaker of the House of Commons Denise Savoie is retiring from political life at the end of August for personal reasons.
Savoie, 69, the MP for Victoria, B.C., said a recent medical worry made her reflect on her personal and professional life. She was first elected MP in 2006 and elected deputy Speaker in June 2011.
"After six years in the House of Commons and nearly 13 years as an elected official, I have decided to return to private life," Savoie said. "My doctor gave me a health warning this spring and recommended that I adopt a more balanced lifestyle, without the travel and physical demands of the job of an MP from Western Canada.
"I am therefore resigning as the Member of Parliament for Victoria."
Savoie announced her retirement Thursday alongside NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, who said Savoie leaves a "tremendous legacy to the House of Commons and to the New Democratic Party of Canada."
"Denise is a leader in our caucus," Mulcair said. "She will be missed by all of her colleagues regardless of political affiliation."
Without Savoie, the NDP will hold 100 seats in the House of Commons. A byelection will have to be held in Savoie's riding to find a replacement.
Savoie was the first woman to be elected as an MP in Victoria.
