MONTREAL – Former Parti Quebecois leadership candidate Martine Ouellet has officially entered the race to lead the Bloc Quebecois.

She turned in the necessary papers in Montreal on Sunday.

Ouellet, 47, is a twice-failed PQ leadership candidate who now sits in Quebec’s legislature as an independent.

She finished third in the last leadership race in 2016, where she was the only candidate who promised to hold a sovereignty referendum in a first mandate if elected premier.

Last week, Ouellet said she wants 50 per cent of the Bloc’s candidates to be women in the next federal election in 2019.

The Bloc will choose a new leader April 22.

Félix Pinel won't run for Bloc Québécois leadership

Canadian Press

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

MONTREAL — Quebec politician Félix Pinel won’t be running for the leadership of the Bloc Québécois.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Pinel explains that he has not collected the required 1,000 signatures from party members on his nomination papers, including 15 from 25 different constituencies.

He says the party is preventing a real race by cutting 30 days out of the time to sign nomination papers by new party members.

But Pinel ends his message by saying he is in the Bloc Québécois to stay and plans to support Martine Ouellet, the only declared leadership candidate so far. The Bloc will choose a new leader April 22.

Pinel ran for the BQ in the 2015 federal election in the Rivière-des-Mille-Îles riding north of Montreal, but lost to Liberal Linda Lapointe.

Ouellet officially entered the race to lead the BQ on Sunday.

MONTREAL – The only candidate to run for the Bloc Quebecois leadership has been given the job.

Martine Ouellet was named the party’s leader today after no candidate emerged to oppose her.

The only other potential candidate said earlier this week that he hadn’t collected enough signatures to run.

Ouellet, 47, is a former Parti Quebecois cabinet minister who now sits in Quebec’s legislature as an independent.

She finished third in the last PQ leadership race in 2016, where she was the only candidate who promised to hold a sovereignty referendum in a first mandate if elected premier.

She has said she plans to keep her seat in Quebec’s legislature while serving as Bloc leader.

Let's hope the national NDP find the same kind of leader the PQ has found.
