The story is framed as an apology, but it's really revealing. We know that Pat Martin is a self-righteous hot-head, but this goes beyond that. He's acting like an 18th century north Britain squire defending his family's 'rotten borough' ...
It's as if his ego has completely merged with his riding. He experiences other politicians making announcements on his turf like someone has spit in his face.

Pat Martin helps the CPC far more then he hurts it.
You need to win "the middle" if you want to ever have a chance to govern, and as long as Mulcair has folks like Martin in his caucus it becomes very easy to scare off that middle you need.
During the "coalition government" scare of 2008/09 the most effective tool to polarize voters was the term "Finance Minister Jack Layton" which resulted in the Tories polling at nearly 60% during that crisis.
MP's like Martin terrify the silent majority of voters; |
