MONTREAL — Federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff's election team was caught off-guard by the surprise announcement that a longtime Laval MP in his caucus is not going to seek re-election.

Raymonde Folco — who has represented Laval-Les Îles since 1997 — said in a statement Monday she was stepping aside after winning her riding in five elections.

"I wish to thank my leader, Michael Ignatieff, for his unshakable support," Folco said. "I also wish to thank the voters in the riding of Laval-Les Îles for their support over five elections. I am confident they will choose to support the Liberal team on May 2."

Although Ignatieff had been in Montreal since Saturday night, the Liberal team said they learned the news only Sunday.

For his part, Ignatieff wished Folco a "happy retirement" from politics, noting she will by "truly missed" in Ottawa.

"I wish to thank Raymonde for her hard work and passion. The citizens of Laval-Les Îles were very well served for 14 years by this devoted MP," he said.

The riding of Laval-Les Îles has long been considered a Liberal stronghold in the Montreal region.

In 2008 election, Folco won the seat with 40 per cent of the vote — a victory margin of 9,027 votes.

A new Liberal candidate has not yet been announced.
