Everybody seems to be piling on after his unfortunate and silly Assange/Wikileaks remark.
Give Tom Flanagan a break. The man put his foot in his mouth. That's what television pundits are paid to do. That's what tenured professors are expected to do.
On the plus side for Dr. Flanagan, everybody in the world knows who he is now. If I were advising him, I'd ask him to get an agent, contact Assange (or someone who looks like him) and make a pitch to FOX or CNN for a joint talk show. He should cash in his new-found notoriety :-)

I have absolutely no love for Tom Flanagan. In fairness, I think the man wasn't dead serious with what he said on CBC (I say it aired live and was shocked for a sec) but I still don't like him.
Flanagan along with a few others like say Gerry Nicholls come off as really bitter with regards to Stephen Harper. I'm not saying disagreement isn't okay but the media loves getting these two on because they usually aren't kind to the PM. So of course the media points out that Tom and Gerry were Harper's Chief of Staff, or Vice President at the NCC (respectively) as if to say, "Even they dislike him!"
I've met Gerry Nicholls, once... and I have to admit that he is actually the more mild of the two based on his writing and his attacks. Tom Flanagan is the kind of guy that gets paid to go to universities and be a bigmouth. He didn't disappoint when I saw him and spoke to him. Make no mistake, there are elitist conservatives. I have little doubt that he is one of them.
