I mean no disrespect by asking this question, I am purely asking it so that I may learn :)

Is my understanding of Buddhist reincarnation correct? If we are bad people we are reborn as either animals or ghosts who suffer on earth. Say I was reborn as an animal, how would it be possible for me to be reborn as a human in a next life? Is it possible or am I doomed forever to be reborn as an animal forever?

You don't really have free-will in Hinduism. You are a victim of your own fate.
