Iggy's former chief of staff knocks Sun Media

OTTAWA – Read this if you can.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff's former chief of staff, Ian Davey, hit Sun Media readers below the belt Sunday, hinting they're all illiterate.

That means you can't read.

When asked about a Sun Media report that Liberal MP Bob Rae might support federal cash being spent on a hockey rink in Quebec City to lure a new NHL franchise back to the provincial capital, Davey took a shot at not just the Toronto Sun, but the whole chain's 6.5 million readers.

"It was once said about the Toronto Sun that it's a newspaper for people who can't read," Davey said during Sunday's Question Period on CTV. "And I think that probably applies to the whole chain."

Ignatieff's press secretary immediately distanced the Liberal Party from Davey's cheap shot, saying Davey — who was dropped by Ignatieff just over a year ago — speaks for himself.

"Mr. Davey is obviously speaking in a personal capacity as a political commentator and his remarks do not reflect the position of the party," wrote Michael O'Shaughnessy in an e-mail.

Toronto Sun Editor-in-Chief James Wallace said the Sun and its readers will survive the “elitist cheap shot.”

"We think our newspaper should hold politicians accountable, defend the poor, abused taxpayer in this country, and stick up for the little guy," Wallace said. "Not everyone agrees with us and we're proud of that.

“Our readers do and that’s what matters to us,” he added. “They come to us for a point of view they can’t get anywhere else in this country and we’re proud of that as well.”

Davey is credited as being instrumental in convincing Ignatieff to leave Harvard University and run as a Liberal in federal politics and to seek the party’s leadership. He was replaced as Ignatieff's chief of staff in October 2009 by former Chretien aide Peter Donolo.

The senior spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the remarks reflect what is wrong with the Liberal Party and Ignatieff himself.

"Mr. Ignatieff's former chief of staff believes that unless you've been to Harvard, like Mr. Ignatieff, you're illiterate," Dimitri Soudas said. "He is as arrogant and out of touch with Canadians as Mr. Ignatieff."

Davey could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Ian Davey is an idiot, but we thank him for being the idiot that he is.

He just let the Liberal scat out of the bag.

This smug little Toronto elitist just called you an illiterate — you, and the 20% of the Canadian public, hundreds of thousands of you, who are loyal readers of Sun Media’s chain of newspapers.

Perhaps the former chief-of-staff to Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff, and son of storied Liberal strategist Keith (The Rainmaker) Davey, does not have the capacity to appreciate what a $#*! storm he has created.

But we do. And we appreciate it.

Asked Sunday during CTV’s Question Period about Bob Rae’s potential support of federal bucks for a possible NHL arena in Quebec City, the lesser Davey sloughed off the question with this high-brow insult.

“It was once said about the Toronto Sun that it’s a newspaper for people who can’t read,” he said. “And I think that probably applies to the whole chain.”

So, there it is — straight from the horse’s ass.

You, dear readers, are as dumb as posts.

So, whether you are in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto or Ottawa — homes to our fleet of tabloids – perhaps you can find a Liberal at your local library who will read this editorial to you.

They are easy to spot.

They’ll have their heads up their arse.

It is nigh impossible to believe, however, that Ignatieff himself doesn’t think the same way, since it was Davey who travelled to Cambridge in 2004 to convince Professor Ignatieff — BA, MA, PhD, BFD — to come down from his lectern and return to Canada after a three-decade absence to pursue the ghost, and assume the high forehead, of Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

They are minds that think alike.

We stated here at the outset that the Liberal leader’s summer road show, the so-called Liberal Express, was nothing but a circus act trying to sell the illusion that Ignatieff was no different than the average Canadian working stiff.

And Ian Davey, Liberal spokesman, and former chief-of-staff to Ignatieff, has now confirmed the ruse.

To the Liberal elite, you are the underclass.

To the Liberal elite, you are worthy only of insults.

You are nothing but an illiterate.

But even illiterates know how to make an X on an election ballot.

And that is the definitive upside.

Iggy's ex-aide denies 'illiterate' quip was aimed at Sun readers

What do you think of Iggy's former chief of staff?

OTTAWA - Ian Davey denies he was attacking Sun Media readers when he said the chain's papers were for people "who can't read."

While he made no apology to Sun readers, he told the Globe and Mail Monday his remarks were directed at the Sun papers, not their readers.

Davey is a former chief of staff to Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. Davey left the post last October.

On Sunday, in the capacity of a political analyst, he told CTV's Question Period: "It was once said about the Toronto Sun that it's a newspaper for people who can't read. And I think that probably applies to the whole chain."

When asked for comment Monday, Davey referred Sun Media to his remarks on the Globe and Mail's website.

"My comments were not directed at Sun readers, they were directed at the Sun papers," Davey told the Globe.

Davey made his comments about the Toronto Sun and the Sun Media chain when confronted by Conservative strategist Tim Powers that a Sun Media report said Liberal MP Bob Rae supported spending federal cash on a hockey arena in Quebec.

"Tim Powers represented a story quoting from the Sun as fact," Davey wrote to the Globe. "I suggested that the source was a dubious one. Not surprisingly, the Sun story was a distortion of the events.

There was a time when the Sun was irreverent, compelling and relevant. It ceased being any of those things years ago. Sun readers deserve better." Rae also hinted his words were taken out of context in the Sun report.

Rather than supporting a federally funded arena in Quebec, he reportedly said Monday he was only cautioning the government that if they did fund the arena, they would have to provide funds for similar projects across the country.
