Has anyone ever thought of installing their own residential backup power? With the advent of wind and solar power, the fact is that dependable 24/7/365 power soon will be a thing of the past. I was toying with the idea recently, and there are a few alternatives.
A portable generator, manually plugged in and switched to power a few critical circuits.
A dedicated standby, automatic self tests and switchover (various fuel sources).
Battery systems, like this http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/.....roduct.asp
Also, make sure that your generator is stored securely - even when running. In the case of a general power outage, homes with lights still on become targets for generator thieves (happened quite a bit during that storm, as I recall).
