Edmonton -- An Edmonton man convicted of promoting hatred through his website has been sentenced to 16 months in jail.

Reni Sentana-Ries, 63, was told by Mr. Justice Philip Clarke of the Court of Queen's Bench that his views are appalling, that he showed no remorse and that he is a high risk to reoffend.

After his release, Mr. Sentana-Ries, formerly known as Reinhard Gustav Mueller, will face 36 months of probation during which he will not be allowed to use the Internet.

He has also been ordered to take down his website.

I'm not condoning what this man did but if he was an Imam the police wouldn't have went near him.

They've created a paradox. The government is regulated by old fools with reactionary opinions. But now the old fools with reactionary opinions are being regulated by the government. We're through the looking glass.

Of course not, if he were a Muslim he would be given credibility and a high-ranking position as a scholar.

What happened to freedom of speech?

Now there are watchmen who say what hate is. But who watches the watchmen?

According to the previous Liberal government, freedom of speech was overrated.

I condemn this action. People have the right to free speech including hate speech (not in Canada but it's unalienable). If this person has written something which implicates him in a crime then he should be charged but not for expressing opinions which are not true.

I think the protection of speech is more important then the content of any specific website. We cannot condone this type of government action. People should not have their websites taken down like this.

Just cause he's an idiot doesn't mean he should be in jail.

Welcome to democracy where a small minority can demand something which a large majority doesn't care about. Then there are us - and we don't vote for them anyway.

Another reason why parties that cater to special interest groups should be denounced, not glorified, by the unaffected majority.

Just a second. It wasn't just his views. He called on visitors to the website to rise up against an alleged Jewish conspiracy and isolate and neutralize Jews.

As far as I am concerned calls for violance SHOULD be dealt with by courts.

Then he should be charged with conspiracy to commit a crime or uttering death threats - not hate speech.
