Tories plan new roster for fall election
WAYNE THIBODEAU
The Guardian

Three new faces are expected to be on the ballot for the federal Conservative Party on P.E.I. if an election is held this fall.
Mary Crane, the party’s candidate in Malpeque and Tom DeBlois, the candidate in Charlottetown, have both said they will not be reoffering.
Sid McMullin, the Conservative candidate in Cardigan, said he hasn’t made a final decision but he too is expected to take a pass.
Cecil Taylor, a national councillor with the Conservative Party in Prince Edward Island, says search committees are in place and the party will be holding nominating conventions soon if the minority Conservative government falls and Canadians are sent back to the polls.
“There are a number of names that are shaking the bushes, to see what their support level would be like,” Taylor told The Guardian.
“They want to survey the lay of the land before they say yea or nay.”
Political parties of all stripes are getting ready for a possible fall election, less than 12 months after the last vote. None of the opposition parties appear willing to support the minority Conservative government when the House of Commons resumes its fall session Sept. 14.
Taylor said if an election is called, his party can move up the dates of the nominating conventions. He said it usually takes 42-49 days to hold a nominating convention.
“Having said that, if in two weeks time we’re going into a writ period, then the president of the party and the director of political operations has the power to suspend those rules and go to a hurry up nominating procedure.”
No dates have been set for nominating convention. The party hopes it won’t have to appoint candidates.
“The ridings are very aware that they may have to get dates in a hurry,” added Taylor.
Egmont is the only seat currently held by the Conservatives.
Fisheries Minister Gail Shea will be running for the party’s nod in that riding.
Mary Crane was on the ballot for the Conservatives in 2004 and 2008. She’s teaching in the Middle East state of Qatar and won’t be seeking the nomination.
Tom DeBlois ran for the Conservatives in 2006 and 2008 and won’t be seeking the nomination again.
Sid McMullin ran for the party in 2008 and says that he’s not fully decided, but he too is expected to pass the torch to a new candidate.
The Conservative Party is holding a joint fundraising dinner Sept. 26 at New Glasgow Lobster Suppers. Environment Minister Jim Prentice will be in attendance. That fundraising dinner is being held to support the four ridings as they get set for the fall campaign.
Taylor said the country doesn’t need an election now, but the party needs to be ready in case the opposition parties overthrow the government this fall.

( i'm disappointed to hear that Mary Crane won't be running again as i think she was a good candidate who had a good shot in that riding )

Will we see Bernard Lord run in New Brunswick if an election is held in the fall?
