Far be it from me to defend Stelmach, but Cabinet Ministers are a different kettle of fish from backbenchers. Some kind of discipline isn't totally out of order - kicking him out of caucus altogether was a bit of an overreaction, though.

I agree, especially with your final point. daveberta ( http://daveberta.blogspot.com ) had a hilarious "tweet" on this today..

There is a definite leadership vacuum in AB. Stelmach usually appears to be indecisive, but then sporadically overcompensates.

What did Boutilier do that was so bad that it deserved the Premier making 2 calls on his own. The first to can him from caucus, the second to call him up and read Boutilier the edict.

He spoke up on behalf of his constituents about funding for a long term care centre that was approved over 18 months ago and got canned for his efforts. The health board is making decisions for the government right now and that is not how it should be.

First Lady,

Definately an apt description of Stelmach's style. Some of the worst wrecks I've seen have been caused by the driver nodding off at the wheel, drifiting off course, then suddenly jerking the wheel to overcorrect when they're bumped awake.

Aardvark,

I don't disagree that Boutillier was doing his job. The double edged sword of accepting a cabinet position in a Westminster system is trading the ability to do more for greater exposure to party discipline. There's a lot of times I'm thankful to have an MP that isn't a minister, though I know he'd be a fantastic one.

Does anyone else find it unsettling that Stelmach didn't have the intestinal fortitude to kick Boutillier from caucus face-to-face? What else doesn't Stelmach have the guts to do?

I'm not really sure, but I see a caucus rebellion in the near future
