February 2009: budgetary surplus of $0.8 billion

April 2008 to February 2009: budgetary surplus of $1.3 billion

While the USA racks up mind boggling deficits that will have to be paid back for generations, Canada, under the Conservatives, continues to run surpluses. The applause from the media should be coming soon - wait for it, wait for it...

I saw that! Pretty encouraging.

CTR managed to actually report on this but 3//4 of the article was on how things are gonna get worse from here.

I don't know, a lot of people are saying we've hit bottom and are leveling out. I get that sense myself also.

Imagine if the feds don't go into deficit or only post a small one!

Meh, I'd love to be excited about this news, but the reality is that we're in surplus for February because the vast majority of the budget hasn't actually been spent - the shovel-ready projects aren't shovel-ready enough. If anything, the defecit will be larger than anticipated for the year, not smaller.

Yet I seem to recall when the media discovered the federal government ran a monthly deficit a few months back, they (MSM) were all over it, speculating if it was evidence of fiscal mismanagement on the part of the Conservatives... until bloggers started pointing out how often the Liberals ran monthly and quarterly deficits but always ended up the year in surplus...

Remember... "surplus" means "excessive taxation" rather than "good fiscal management"...
