I think they should be slammed because they are a government company and good Ontarians like randr are working in Ontario to make cars and buy the lottery tickets, so I think it follows that you buy their cars.

One can't reasonably blame the lib's for this tough because what are they supposed to be reviewing all the prizes in the olg?

The only thing the ndp are good for is bringing up trade issues.

Smitherman isn't he the one that thought sitting in a depends for twelve hours would be cool?

I don't think that the lottery corp has an obligation to shop local. Their obligation is to shop for things that will get folks to actually want to buy tickets for their lottery.

Call me crazy, but I would take a Benz as a prize over a Lincoln any day. When I hear Lincolns I think of Grandpa's and crafty outside salesmen.

Here's a question. What makes/models of cars are made in Canada. The terms "import" and "domestic" have become meaningless, as some Asian brands are made here and some of the Big Threes offerings come from off shore.

Although this list is slightly out of date it is a recent list of Canadian made Automobiles.

http://www.canadianmade.com/automotive.shtml

It was a dumb idea for OLG to buy German made cars for the lottery during a recession where Canadian auto workers are having their hours cut back or loosing their jobs. The could have bought a few locally made Acura MDX's (Alliston ON) for premium vehicles for the lottery.

So the only equivalents I see are:

Lexus RX350
Lincoln MKX

I was also of the impression the car bodies for the Mercedes ML500's were made in New Berlin Ontario? As German as it gets outside of Germany but Ontario none the less.

I don't think they should have to, but come on, who wants this sort of publicity?

New Berlin? Kitchener Ontario was called Berlin before WW2 but they changed the name for obvious reasons.

I haven't heard about any car bodies for Mercedes being made in Ontario. It doesn't make business sense that they would build the body in Ontario and ship it to Germany to have it finished.

Most car factories stamp out many of the larger white body parts for the car, weld them together, paint it and put the parts on and drive it off the assembly line, while having the majority of the suppliers of parts being local.

The OLG made a bad judgement to buy foreign manufactured cars when Ontario's Automotive Manufactures sales are down sharply. When the economy was booming I don't think anyone would have really complained. However today at Honda of Canada Mfg associates were complaining, and we build 2 luxury vehicles the Acura MDX and the Acura CSX that would have looked nice on display to win at the Ontario OLG casino's.

They made a smart decision based on how many tickets they wanted to sell. Not only is a Mercedes more of an "unattainable dream" to many than any domestic vehicle, but the future of the big three is very much in doubt. People are more likely to buy a ticket for a car they know they'll be able to get service for over one whose parent company might not exist next year.

The New Berlin thing is a dig from my old UW days,

Apparently "Budd" in Kitchener made Frames for SUV's and Mercedes was a customer but ceased working with them earlier in the decade

Lotteries conjure up dreams of wealth for those who play them. The Mercedes is one of those cars equated with the rich and famous. Why burst that bubble?

Next time, OLG could offer a luxury type Lexus then they could compare how well it measured up to the Mercedes.

This concerns me more.

Taxpayers pay for these vehicles. We're entitled to know the details of those expenditures. Where are those records?

Thanks for the article cosmo. My brother lives in KW ... I've had some good times there especially during Oktoberfest. :D

I would agree that buying any luxury model for the lottery that ultimately earns tax dollars is fine in good economic times. This however was a bit of a slap in the face to Canadian auto assemblers who some are loosing their jobs and others like myself are working reduced work weeks, because of the global recession.

In perspective, 22 vehicles would amount to under 22 minutes of factory time at the Honda factory that I work at, and it would provide 22 minutes of factory work time at the suppliers, and a few truck loads of shipping to Canadian truckers.

Ontario lottery corporation apologizes for imported car giveaway
Quote:
The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. says it regrets using imported cars for its planned lottery at casinos next month while the province's own auto industry struggles to survive.

Provincial government and opposition officials have decried the OLG's April giveaway of 22 Mercedes-Benz B200s, instead of cars made by Ontarians.

Deputy premier George Smitherman said he was furious when he heard about the contest and called the move a "crappy decision" and a "huge lapse" in judgment by lottery executives.

But OLG spokesman Rui Brum said the promotion was developed 10 months ago when the economy was different. He added that the promotion is being reviewed, but stopped short of saying the cars could be replaced.

"It means we are taking a look at all aspects of the promotion," he told CBC News.

Ted Chudleigh, the Progressive Conservative critic for economic development and trade, said the government must be held accountable for the gaffe by OLG a Crown corporation of the province.

"They seem to be out of touch with what's going on in the province of Ontario," Chudleigh said of the Liberals. "They're there for the photo ops, they're there for the announcements, but there's no follow through." (...)

The OLG should be disbanded. Too much corruption involved.

So were worried about protectionism and lecturing other countries about it but we`re forcing the OLG to give away as prizes cars that people don`t even want to buy...

FYI: According to the National Post yesterday Mercedes cars are built with steel from Hamilton so we`re actually hurting ourselves, not to mention the Canadian dealerships

No, no  but I know we as North Americans get ripped off hugely by the oriental countries because they don't let us sell gm, ford etc cars there but we have to let them sell here. The ndp are the only ones who seem to care about this issue, it really boggles my mind.
