We will now need 171 seats to win a majority once the 33 new seats are added. The good news, is that all the seats will be added to provinces west of Quebec.

Alberta: 5 new seats
British Columbia: 7 new seats
Ontario: 21 new seats

Alberta, BC, and Ontario will now have 105,000 for every seat. Still well above the ratio in Quebec and Atlantic Canada but it's a step in the right direction.

So we have to increase our seat total by 28 in the next election to win that covenant majority.

I figure we can pull 5 seats and retake Strathcona in Alberta. That's +6.
In BC, I think we can take 4 of the 7 new seats.
In Ontario, I think we can take 10 or 11 of the new seats.

That means we could get a seat total of 163/4 with the same results from the last election. Not a majority, but a lot closer. It also further degrades the Bloc's stature in Parliament.

I'm glad they're addressing the rep-by-pop problem but I would much rather see fewer MPs rather than more. Instead of adding another expensive politician, why not readjust the current number to match the rep-by-pop?

Constitutionally we can't change it. All the provinces are designated a minimum number of seats by the Constitution Act from 1867.

NFL - 7
PEI - 4
NB - 10
NS - 11
Quebec - 75
Ontario - 95
Manitoba - 14
Saskatchewan - 14
Alberta - 21
British Columbia - 28
Nunavut, NWT, Yukon - 1 each

We can only add, can subtract from these unless we change the constitution and to do so would require 7 of the 10 premiers supporting it. Seeing how more than 3 provinces would lose significance, I can't see how the changes could pass.

I know... wishful thinking on my part is all...

Nothing wrong with wishful thinking, Mac.
