Their website clearly shows they should be taken less than seriously ........ painting this as Ontario and Quebec ganging up on the west??? Efforts would be better spent in decimating the NDP and Liberals everywhere! |

And that's the problem exactly. |

Ontario is largely with Alberta right now in supporting the Conservatives. Hence, this Western Seperatist rise is ill-advised at this time.
It's understandable to have sharp political readiness and the ability to quickly launch a seperatist movement if something totally unacceptable to the west happens in Ottawa... but at the moment, this is premature, very counter-productive, and frankly incorrect as it pertains to what it's saying about Ontario. |

Just a flare up, it won't go anywhere. The real threat comes when you start seeing Western supporters abandon the CPC - that's the canary in the coal mine, and that is a long, long way off. |

You're right .. but frankly, I wouldn't give this much credence at this stage. There are always going to be some fringe separatist movements in Alberta. As others have stated here and in other related threads, Albertans are generally federalists .. the only thing that will precipitate a serious separatist movement in the west is an attack on our economy (specifically oil and gas).
Should the Coalition get in, appoint Elizabeth May to Minister of Environment, follow through on the Green-Shift, put a moratorium on oil sands development and demand a share of energy revenue .. then look out. |

I gotta say that Alberta is positive environment for Canadian politics. My sister and her husband (in the forestry / pulp and paper industry) had to move to Alberta for work when Abitibi-Bowater collapsed in Thunder Bay, ON. Although they are not even close to being political junkies, they have always tended to vote left of center. I have always teased my sister that she must be adopted since she isn't a Tory like big brother.
I have always responded to their questions whenever they wanted to talk politics (and that's a key ....don't try to babble on if they ain't interested). FINALLY, after living in Alberta for a year, in the last Federal election they did their homework and decided to switch to the "Dark Side".
Maybe we need to periodically send some left of center supporters out there so they can come to their senses....... must have something to do with the Rocky Mountain fresh air or the Chinooks! |

| Wow there's new western separtist movements popping up but none which garnish enough support. Then there's more Kick Quebec out of Canada movements popping up, again not enough support. So at the end of the day we whine, threaten, then back off from our threats. Personally if the west truly wants out then I should hear about it more often, so obviously the movement has been dismissed at the same level as the United North America proposal. |

As for the support, it can build only with a structured movement, organization, or political party. The fact that such a high percentage of Albertans would consider separation WITHOUT a single serious organization currently in place is food for thought. The potential is HUGHE. |
