Exactly. Wai Young was leading much of the night, until the end where Dosanjh suddenly closed the deficit and edged up several hundred votes. If a recount can determine that a Liberal in Quebec who lost by 102 votes actually won with 69 votes, then anything can happen to such a small margin as 33 votes.

I'm really hoping for Wai Young. If she can defeat Dosanjh that would be huge news. It would be the first core urban seat the Conservatives win. Plus, with her resume, she has cabinet potential.

If nothing else, seeing Ujjal being dragged, kicking and screaming, out of the House of Commons would be wonderful.

The thing is, they only sampled the votes meaning they didn't count each and every single vote. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. What kind of recount is this? I smell something partisan. In a race as close as 33 votes, they should open ALL the boxes.

Apparently on the radio, Wai Young said that she's going to take a few days off to decide whether she will appeal the decision. I think she should absolutely appeal it!

I don't know the process, but that seems like grounds for an appeal to me.

It surely sounds like grounds for an appeal. Count 'em all, one at a time...

Patrick Dohm - was the Justice who presided. Anyone have any info on him?

Maybe this is just the first step of a mandated recount. Maybe she has to appeal to get a full recount?

That's friggin' crazy! That should not be allowed when a race is that close. If you call it a "recount" ALL votes must be recounted! Absolutely disgraceful and undemocratic!

He is a Supreme Court of BC Justice... the Associate Chief Justice, if memory serves... and he's generally well regarded.

We're not talking some low-level flunkie here. If Dohm is involved, there's more to the situation than is being released. Are any of the other recounts being done at this judicial level?

Sad but true. I was surprised occasionally but it was the exception, not the rule.

Some sources tell me that only 28 out of 184 ballot boxes were counted. The room was so small and stuffy that not everyone was able to fit inside. Some people even had to wait outside doing nothing. After Ujjal's margin of victory dropped from 33 votes to 22 votes, the judge suddenly decided that it was time to call it quits when only 15% ballot boxes were counted.

Is it just me, or does something smell disgusting here? This recount is a joke, just to give Elections Canada face value for doing a "recount" to pretend that were actually productive.

Something needs to be done. When a judge decides not to count all the ballots when:
a) the margin of victory dropped
b) when only 15% of ballot boxes were counted
c) the race is so, so close
you know something is very wrong.

Why do they only do some of the ballot boxes in Vancouver but do all the ballot boxes in Quebec. This one was closer than the Quebec one.

But it looks like the judge followed the rules and did the bare minimum he had to for this recount. Probably had a golf game to catch.

Too bad it makes Canadian democracy look bad. Not one media outlet has grabbed this and run. Also will cause CPC people to look for conspiracy theories which makes us look paranoid. I'm sure the media will play that up.

So the Libs steal another one. Crying or Very sad

Imagine being a Canadian Soldier in Afghanistan right now. Risking your life in the name of freedom and democracy while in your own back yard it is being stolen.

I get frustrated at every election because after I have made my mark, I have to give my ballot to someone who then tears off a strip of paper. Sometimes I catch them before they put my ballot in the box, and sometimes I don't and feel as though my vote was taken from me. I was once told I couldn't put my own ballot in the box which caused me to demand it be torn up. Once I've made my vote, no one should touch my ballot, at least that's what I think.

And I think this way because of how incredibly important it is to preserve democracy. All those soldiers who have given their lives in the wars of yesteryear, those who are fighting today, those who will continue to fight because the people we elect deem it necessary in the name of freedom and democracy. And the representative from Vancouver South will be participating in that decision making process. If that isn't the ultimate slap in the face.
