Frankly, I care. These are supposed to be real leaders of our Country. Someone above said that he should have had the commonsense not to say those things in a meeting with scientists, bureaucrats, etc...

I say that we shouldn't have people in parliament that even THINK in those terms.

It's not a matter of being overly sensitive. It is a matter that somebody's child died. Somebody's elderly mother or father died prematurely. Somebody's wife or husband died...

Really awful...

I also say toast him. It won't effect my vote either way but this type of arrogance and bullish behavior reminds me of the old Liberals... I don't like it at all.

This is yet another example that a Conservative politician must ALWAYS be extremely careful about what he/she says or does in sight / hearing of the general public. Every thing they do and say is carefully scrutinized for <choke> "typical conservative meanness, blah, blah blah, etc, etc, etc"

Isn't it interesting that the various left-of-center parties can make policy announcements and media releases following the many tragic shootings in Toronto, or much later as with the Dawson College incident, and the media doesn't bat an eye........it's okay for them!

But when a Conservative does something like that (even if it was a stupid thing to say), the media and leftists jump all over it as making light of a tragedy and personal loss. Mad No matter what you think, Harper has made the correct choice by very promptly apologizing (as well as the offending party) and the firestorm subsides ..... trying to explain, ignore, or debate the issue will only prolong the misery (think Garth Turner Laughing )

Yes well said. And I'll add that I also agree with Harper's swift apology. When I say "toast Ritz", I don't mean to boot him (just to clarify that).

I mean to really put him through the ringer on it in private. Let the electorate decide whether he should be re-elected (and I suspect he will be)

Hey CPC can we PLEEEEEAAASSSEEE get back to the message!?!

I want PMSH to have everybody from the ministers on down invoke the 10 second rule. Every sentence, joke, quip, musing etc.. thought about for a full 10 seconds before you blurt it out!

When the MSM jokes around with you asking your opinion on something what they are really saying is "say something dumb for the 6pm broadcast"!

Man I wish it was 2006 again. I miss the Stand up for Canada election.

It was insensitive for him to say that, but the bigger problem is how did this get out if this were a private meeting between government officials? Once again, a leak in the bureaucracy.

But can you now say bye, bye majority? I think so!

Politicians are human (well, most of 'em) and it's neither possible nor advisable to be 100% serious at all times. A sense of humour is usually an asset.

I find the remark quite funny but let's face it- police and other emergency response workers have an ample dose of gallows humour. It helps to keep us sane. Perhaps a few of you who are calling for Ritz's head on a platter should visit your doctor and have your funny bone checked?

How many times have Conservatives been accused of being thin-skinned and having no sense of humour when a Liberal makes a clever jibe? Well, if they can't have it both ways. Ritz apologized and it's time to get over it.

Guys, the days of fearing the big bad boogy man that is the MSM are over. If this kind of comment came from the Reform Party under Stockwell Day, sure, it would have been a bloodbath. But the times have changed. Canadians know Harper better and they understand the Conservative Party better. This comment simply won't have the affect you think it might.

The more the opposition stretches out this Ritz business, the more voters will lose patience with them. Canadians want to know about issues and not who got caught saying stupid things 2 days or 2 years ago.

Any bump for the Tories could also be as a result of the mindless spending and tax increases announced yesterday by Dion, Layton and May.

Made me gag.

At this stage of the election, I wonder if anyone other than the MSM, opposition parties, and political junkies even notice this and other "gaffes"??

Out of curiousity, I talked to about a dozen people (the prototypical Jane and John Doe's) I know to see what they have heard about the election campaign. None of them are even aware of these incidents! So, despite the media uproar and blog-wars, I am left to hope that these "incidents" will not happen in the end stage of the campaign and people will then see the Conservatives as their best option. ........ Even though it has a high margin of error the Nanos (?) regional poll that shows the Conservatives as leading in the Northern and Eastern Ontario region is a boost to my hopes.....because I have a hard time remembereing when that last happened!

Yeah - I'm not nearly as into this election as I was last one. I think most Canadians are getting kind of tired of all of the partisan rhetoric.

Agreed. Also this new trend of having elections every two years or so like the Americans doesn't really appeal to Canadians.
