Professor Murray designed some of the most successful Formula One cars ever built - as well as the McLaren F1, for years the world's fastest road going car.

But now, he has left the high-octane world behind and turned his attention to making the motor car more environmentally friendly.

For the past year, he has been working on a radical design that he claims will shake up the entire industry.

The problem, he says, is that while manufacturers are investing billions of dollars in making cars more efficient, the progress they are making is far too slow.

The reason is simple: Weight.

"Every single new model in a particular market segment is bigger and heavier than the one before," he explains.

"The excuse is always that higher safety standards mean heavier cars.

"But the real reason is that carmakers want to go upmarket and sell bigger, more luxurious cars and make more profit. And heavy cars use more fuel."

Making cars lighter does make them less safe, but the guy probably has a point.

Smart cars are fuel efficient, and still meet safety standards.

From what I understand, Smart Cars are actually above average for safety.

Don't think so. The Smart cars have some serious reliability and build quality issues.Great idea, mediocre follow through.

If they could make it not look so sad and ugly, I would already have one. Nothing wrong with fuel efficiency. I've also seen a few shows on the interior, and they seem to be as nice inside as any luxury car, just no back seat. Not a transportation solution for when my wife and I start to have children but for now it's an option.

Smart cars are only safe is they aren't driving around with Escalades. If all cars were smaller then safety would be less of an issue. When you have Corollas and Hummers driving side by side you can bet your ass I'm putting my family in the hummer.

Also, people occasionally need to get some sheets of drywall, some people more often than others. This is why there will always be some large vehicles on the road. I would not mind a smart car, but a new motorcycle would be better.

Not to mention have 3 or more children who wouldn't appreciate being placed in the trunk of a not-so-smart car.
