New Democrat will apologize for political blunder

Updated Wed. Dec. 5 2007 8:11 PM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Just hours after alleging that a Tory MP had brought the honour of parliamentarians into question, a New Democrat MP is apologizing for her own political blunder.
During Wednesday's question period in the House of Commons, Irene Mathyssen claimed that she had seen James Moore viewing pictures of "scantily clad" women on his laptop in the parliamentary chamber.
She then went on to question his integrity as a member of the Commons, claiming his actions disrespected women.
Moore vehemently denied he had done anything wrong, and now it turns out that he wasn't looking at improper images at all.
The pictures that Mathyssen had seen -- and misinterpreted as improper -- were apparently just images of a friend.
CTV's David Akin said that he spoke with Moore Wednesday evening. He was told that Moore and Mathyssen have spoken since their exchange in the House and that Moore had explained that the pictures were of his girlfriend.
Akin said he was told that Mathyssen had accepted the explanation.

Mathyssen will explain her new position more fully tomorrow in question period. Late Wednesday, the NDP confirmed that she "is satisfied" with Moore's explanation.
In a press release, the New Democrats said that "Ms. Matheson has accepted the explanation and offered her apologies."
Akin said that Moore told him that "this has been the worst day of his career."
Earlier in the day, before Mathyssen had backed away from her claims, CTV Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said he was at a loss to recall if anyone had leveled such allegations against an MP before.
He told CTV Newsnet, "What we are witnessing is a House of Commons in the last month-and-a-half which has really gone into a lot of mudslinging, a lot of effort to ruin people's reputations."

This is horrible. What she did gives all politicians a bad name. No wonder no one takes the NDP more seriously.

Seems some opposition M.P.s were trying to link this with the anniversary of the shootings in Montreal. Shameful.

But four hours after making the allegations against Moore (Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam), Mathyssen was on the telephone offering an apology to the 31-year-old MP.

"He offered an explanation of the incident as it occurred. She has accepted his explanation of the incident and has offered her apologies," said NDP spokesperson Ian Capstick.

Damage done. There should be consequences. She could have asked Mr. Moore about it before accusing him in the House.

I wonder what Taliban Jack's position is on all of this. He must have know that she was going to get up and start throwing daggers in the house. I sure hope he'll offer an apology on behalf of the party.

I love it that name "Taliban Jack" still has some play.

So, in the end MPs are allowed to look at pictures of"scantily clad" women provided that they are your girlfriend?

I say this with great respect to Moore who is one of the best MPs. If you are going to sit in HOC to do the people's business, then do the people's business. If the what is currently going on is boring you silly, find a better way to entertain yourself or go out in the hall.

I don't understand how you can call him Taliban Jack for suggesting the same thing Peter McKay suggested just a few months ago. It's all fair as long as we refer to McKay as "Taliban Pete".

Anyway, on topic, pretty stupid over reaction by the NDP. If she had concerns there were better places to bring it up.

She was envious that no one would ever look at her in any scantily clad pictures - just another example of the cronies called the NDP...

What did Mr. McKay suggest a few months ago? More info? Links?

The NDP look at the other parties and especially the NDP as the enemy. Because they are socialist lefty wacko's they do not look at the CPC as people trying their best to serve the country just as they are, but as enemies to be destroyed at all cost.

Glad it blew up in their faces. But it won't fase them because they feel they are morally superior.
