Conventional political wisdom says that a politician should never say that he or she is going to raise taxes if elected, particularly if the tax that is going to be raised is one that affects a substantial percentage of the electorate... and the GST affects pretty much all of us.

So, if conventional political wisdom holds... these ads will absolutely bury Dion, and quite possibly bring the Liberals to brand new lows in popular support.

The Liberal response to this ad seems to be to nuance the issue, and argue that, well, they'd replace a GST tax cut with a deeper income tax cut.

I have my doubts that such a response will work with Joe and Jane Average Canadian, but we'll have to wait and see.

It's a very gutsy ad, and it'll be interesting to see how it'll play out.

Craig Oliver, over on MDL, stated that he suspects that Dion's statements on the GST, combined with this ad, will mean a 5% increase in popular support for the Tories in the polls over the coming month.

This is one time where I hope that Mr. Oliver is right. 8)

This is the end of Dion. He might not even make it to the next election.

What about if the tax in question, is one which a former leader of your party won an election by promising to end? Furthermore, what if the tax in question has been rendered a radioactive topic for your party in perpetuity by the breaking of said election promise?

Would conventional political wisdom still hold?

Good points. I think that Dion is in big trouble.

Reducing the Liberal brand name seems almost seems like chipping away at Mount Rushmore.

I guess a 12 year free ride will do that to you.

But with the Sponsorship scandal and now the most inept Federal party leader since Joe Clark ya never know. If they don't right the ship soon splits in the facade will start showing, especially if there is a revolt on the party ranks that breaks party wide.
