WASHINGTON — The political winds have been shifting for a while on free trade. So much so that even most Republicans are no longer true believers.

Six out of 10 Republicans now believe free trade hurts the U.S. economy, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

It's a remarkable shift. In 1999 – the last time pollsters asked a similar question – 63 per cent of Republicans said free trade was either neutral or positive for the U.S. economy.

Former Federal Reserve Board chief Alan Greenspan lamented recently that “I no longer recognize” the Republican Party because of its record on fiscal restraint, deregulation and free trade.

So if everybody is a protectionist in the US presidential race, where does that leave us Canadians?

The rhetoric is always protectionist in the lead up to an election. I wouldn't read too much into it. The problem is that the "lead up to an election" seems to be continuous in the USA...

I'd be worried if Dems take the White House...
