Suffice to say, I didn't intend to gift two "positive" reputation points to a certain troll and if the Admins could find it in their hearts to either delete or change the "positive" into a "negative", I would be eternally grateful.

You could always cancel the two positives with two negative, of coarse it would end up costing you four points just to even things out...
hmmm I guess you'll have to use two more points to get the desired effect, ok so it's gonna cost you six points. Not terribly efficient but it's the principle of the matter :~)
I'll shut up now before you give me the neg points!

I considered doing exactly that, urbanmonk, but the software informed me that I should "spread reputation points around" and will not allow me to do so.

Look I'm sorry, I don't post often and I come here relatively often, at least once a day to see what the heck is going on.

I love the blogroll, I visit several times a day.

But this is just so much kindergarten nonsense. What is the main purpose except to keep people with the "party line"? I need a rational reason we are grading folks and their opinions. While little stars and the like are excellent ways to promote potty training, If some one is a doofus or a troll isn't the best thing to do is just ignore the fact that they have posted and ignore them into obscurity?

Confused why you have adopted this system.

I don't think we are grading the opinion, it is more about grading the thought and research that goes into those opinions. If someone came here and brought a well reasoned argument against the flat tax, some serious discussion, i would appreciate that, maybe even give rep. If they came here and yelled that flat taxers were morons, I would probably just ignore it, or give negative rep if it actually looked like they would care about that.

Don't you also get rep for giving rep? The screen shots I looked at, at the phpbb site, showed a control panel with something like 1 point for every 20 givings or so.

My Question Is:

Why should one lose a few points while giving reps away to some one else? I think it is a bit confusing...

You will appreciate receiving it more if it cost someone something to give it to you.

Oh.
So, I was giving my points away?
That explains why I went from 12 rep points down to 3.
I have to say, that's a really weird way of doing things. Why should generosity hurt me? If I want to clap all my friends on teh back for saying something bright, shouldn't I be allowed?

So the more rep you have, the more you give it seems. I sent 5 points Ruth way, but when I look at the vote, it gave her six. So my huge rep seems to have some side benefits.

Still can't seem to give more than Biggie though. I was the number one giver for about 5 seconds a few days ago.

If a person gives a person more reuputation & you lose points does that mean by giving them negative reputation you are giving points to yourself? :?

No, negative rep is the same as positive rep, it will cost you the same points either way. That is why it is not worth it to give negative rep to someone who will only post 3 times anyway.

Woohoo! Thanx.
Still, that seems kinda weird.

I like it. You accumulate rep, and you say starts to carry more weight. I but if I had a really huge amount of rep, like say 100 or so, I bet that if I gave 5 points, the system would double it. I would be like the king of the world!

Sounds to me like the software was written by a socialist!

Yes. You are allowed. You can reply to their post telling them how wonderful you think they are. But giving reputation away willy nilly is meaningless. If everyone can give reputation away for free it would become a meaningless gesture. I'll look for a "pat on the back" mod next if you want.

Can you keep giving if you have negative rep? Would you just get an even more negative reputation?
