It is research that is guaranteed to delight men - and infuriate the women in their lives. A controversial new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women.

The study - carried out by a man - concluded that men's IQs are almost four points higher than women's.

British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton, who previously created a furore by suggesting intelligence is influenced by race, says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.

Cue rush of lefties screaming about the inherent bias of standardized exams, pro-male educational systems ... etc.

That said, I think the assertion that one sex is intellectually superior to another is absurd.

My thinking is that IQ isn't all it's cracked up to be. There are things we can say about IQ ...
I come up with several thoughts:

- there are more male idiots and more males geniuses ... there's no doubt about that!
- any difference between the sexes is small, less than five points
- Canada's women had no problem at all with the three years during which the science said that women are smarter than men: Men do not like hearing that we are smarter than the women. That says that, for the most part, Canada's women have little problem with sexism targeted at their menfolk while men do not like sexism targeted at their womenfolk. This seems to match well with Canadian society.

For years my girlfriend was the person usually considered the third smartest in the world. She's one of those people who gets annoyed if she has to use the down clues on a tough crossword puzzle. Yet, this is the same woman who put half a pound of unground coffee beans in the coffee maker and couldn't figure out why the coffee tasted strange. This is the same woman who set the toaster oven on fire by putting so much cheese on a piece of bread that the cheese was touching the elements. I could go on and on and on and ...

IQ isn't all it is stacked up to be.

Men are definitely different than women. We need different nurturing when we are young, different education and strict boundaries as we grow older.

As for intelligence, well, mena are better at different things than women, I will agree with that. Other wise could be true, could be that a man wrote the test and other men know the answers automagically.

The tests have been written by men and women. I would like someone to explain why you get 6 to 10 points added to your score for checking the female box ...

Try going to any of the online IQ tests, check male and do the test. Submit it and get your score. Now use your browser's back button to get to the beginning of the test and check the female box. Use the forward button to get to the end of the test and resubmit the test. Your score will have gone up by 6 to 10 points.

The thing here is the males tend to have reading problems while females tend to have math & visualization problems. One cancels the other. There should be no score difference but there is on ALL tests.

Oh I don't think the general population is at all stupid. Uninformed? YES! But not at all stupid. There is a BIG difference.

There is a lot to be learned and it takes time to learn it. One person does a study and another tries to knock it down. Still another retries the original study. And so it goes back and forth and back and forth ... eventually a consensus builds and we have a new fact. That is how science works!

I do think you may well have a point in regard to news writers. Only a very few of today's newspaper writers are capable of understanding the basics of science. Plus, you must be quite anti-male to write in almost all of today's papers. Look at the OP here, saying that men will be happy cause a study says men are smarter ... yet most men diss the study.

The thing is most men do not like misogyny while most women refuse to take a stand against misandry. Newspaper writers seem incapable of understanding the basics of the gender dynamics at hand.

The thing which gets me is the gender dynamics are not at all complex!

It was a 1/2 joke ;)

Still, whenever I think that 100 is the average iq... wow.

Of course, I don't put too much stock in standardized IQ tests - at least not specific numbers (ie. 180 is not much smarter than 170). but 125+ is certainly different than 100..

IQ only represents potential. What one does with that potential is up to the individual.

I read an article recently which referred to a study's conclusions that males taught by male teachers do better across the board. Likewise females taught by female teachers do better across the board. There was a time when male teachers were more prevalent but that was long ago. Nowadays, female teachers outnumber male teachers remarkably. Not surprisingly, the number of females outnumber the number of males entering universities and the ratio becomes even more marked when it comes to advanced degrees.

I think it's time we started a Status of Men Commission. Who's with me?

You are quite right about the education by the same sex thing. We need to increase the number of men in primary school. Doing that means making teaching a safe career for men and that means slapping down the worst of the feminists, probably jailing them. Kids are worth the trouble ...

What we need to do in reality is throw out the current Status of Women directorate and replace it with a Directorate charged with fixing serious problems.

There are still some women's problems: Forty years is a fairly short time to solve the sort of problems which were at hand.

There are more than a few men's problems, none of which is being worked on anywhere. Some of them are far more serious than any of the remaining women's problems.

The Native "on reservation" services problem should have been solved fifty years ago. I mean to have water and sewer systems that screwed up is worse than sick: It is IDIOTIC!

I could go on ... The thing is while Canada is a great country, we still are a country with problems which are solvable. It just needs someone to be told by Parliament "Your job is to solve the serious problems." AND Some fair and reasonable means of identifying the serious problems.

Yeah men are faced with increasingly serious problems in society. We are dropping out of education system more frequently, offing ourselves with greater regularity. We see crowds of angry young men signing on to radical and violent ideologies the world over. Something will have to be done, and soon.

As a libertarian, I would rather the government simply get out of these kinds of social engineering programs and go back to their primary role of providing security. If we must have a dedicated body to address these kinds of issues, how about abolishing the Status of Women Commission and creating an Equality Commission which can look at these issues with unbiased eyes.

It sort of disturbs me that some people here seem to be taking Rushton at his word. I may be interested to hear your opinions about his research about race.

Mac: That's what I have been saying for some time: A directorate whose job is to fix serious problems.

Donald Highes:

I don't see anyone agreeing with him. The posters are skeptical ...

There clearly are some factors which, pointed to, seem to say that the professor is right, there are other factors which say he is wrong. I have no idea which way it will go when science finally has a definitive answer.

The smartest person in the world is a woman, Maralyn VosSavant.
IQ tests add points for checking the "female" box
blah blah blah ... on and on and on, points for both sides of the argument and no clear answer either way.

As for race? Oi Vei! Asking about it is a discussion stopper. There's no way of talking about the topic which allows open discussion. The only reason to bring race into the discussion is to stop discussion.
