On the other hand, Vick was breeding dogs for the purposes of fighting, arranging fights & bets, then killing dogs which were unsuccessful in tortuous fashion. That implies deliberation, forethought and cruelty.

Is this dog fighting partly a cultural thing more prevalent in Black American society. I've heard some black athletes come out in support of Vick.

I heard on the Rome show today that 50 of his dogs are going to be euthanized because the Humane society couldn't find them good homes. My buddy at work stated.

"At least with Vick these dogs had jobs" "Now there all gonna die".

Good question; I have no idea and there hasn't been much in the media on that angle (cultural). From the sound of things, dog fighting is a bigger "business" than I expected but no-one is saying much about it.

Strangely, the Reverend Jesse Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton haven't come screaming to Vick's defence. Usually, all it takes to set those two off is someone of colour being accused of wrongdoing. Only a few individuals have spoken on Vick's behalf and most of them speak to his character and express shock and sorrow about his actions. The NAACP and the SCLC protested they feel Vick is being judged too harshly but even they're not denying Vick's behaviour was unacceptable.

Meanwhile Lindsey Lohan gets a misdeaner for her second DUI. She drives drunk more often than sober. I wonder if she ran into a dog while driving drunk if she might get treated more like Vick.

Yeah its his culture that made him kill the dogs by holding em underwater or hanging them with wires.

Dog fighting, some anthro or soc person might be able to defend it.

Killing them in nasty ways is where he REALLY crossed the line. Its not really defendable.

There's a world of difference between making a bad choice (Heatley, Bertuzzi) and the deliberate cruelty of arranging dog fights and killing dogs that lost in painful, torturous ways (Vick)...

I don't think it was the first time Heatley raced through residential neighbourhoods at over 120kms per hour. Killing dogs is sick but putting people and children in danger by driving recklessly is nothing to discount.

I think you have to look at intent though. What Heatley was doing was reckless, no doubt.
But his intent wasnt to hurt anybody or anything.
Torturing animals is the first sign of sociopathic tendencies.
Driving a Ferrari at insane speeds is spoiled athlete.
