Paris Hilton sentenced to jail
Sat May 5, 2007 12:39AM BST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hotel heiress and reality TV star Paris Hilton was ordered on Friday to spend 45 days in jail for violating the terms of her probation for alcohol-related reckless driving.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered the 26-year-old celebrity socialite jailed for driving on a suspended license in February. He ordered her to report to jail on June 5.

The judge, Michael Sauer, made the decision after a two-hour hearing during which Hilton insisted she was unaware that her driving privileges had been suspended when she was pulled over for driving without headlights on February 27.

Hilton was placed on three years probation earlier this year for pleading no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- to alcohol-related reckless driving after a September 2006 arrest in Hollywood.

She landed in hot water again in late February, when she was pulled over on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood for driving without headlights. Police impounded her car, a $190,000 (95,000 pounds) blue Bentley, when they discovered she was driving on a suspended license.

Hilton's latest legal problems come a little more than three weeks before her reality TV show, "The Simple Life," co-starring her friend Nicole Richie," returns to the airwaves for a fifth season. The series has already been taped

How about a Simple Life episode of her experience in jail? I'd watch that.

She didn't have to go to jail, she did it to herself. Hopefully she will learn something from it.

She won't learn anything. She'll probably be transfered to a low risk 'white collar' facility for her own protection. She'll probably have quite a bit of freedom on the grounds, and spend some time playing golf/tennis ... etc, relaxing in a private suite, and so on. After a week or two of good behaviour, she'll be put on some form of supervised community release (probation or home arrest) - which she'll likely violate.

You do realize that this is Paris Hilton we are talking about. "Learning" isn't her forte.

Paris Hilton draws petitions for, against jail
Tue May 8, 2007 5:25 PM EDT

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Internet was abuzz with rival petitions on Tuesday from fans and foes of jail-bound heiress Paris Hilton alternately asking California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon her or make sure she serves her time.

Four days after a Los Angeles judge sentenced Hilton to 45 days in jail for violating her probation by driving on a suspended license, the competing petitions provided a rallying point for a lively debate over whether the celebrity socialite and reality TV star deserves her punishment.

"We think 45 days in jail is a cruel punishment for the caliber of what she did," said Kyle Vincent, an artist who launched the FreeParis.org Web site and is trying to collect one million signatures on a petition seeking clemency by June 5, the date the hotel heiress was ordered to report to jail.

Vincent, 27, described himself as a longtime Hilton fan who believes her story that she was unaware her license had been suspended when she was caught driving 70 mph, or 45 mph over the speed limit after dark without headlights in February.

Vincent was also using his site to hawk "Free Paris" T-shirts for $18.99 a piece, along with similarly themed buttons, bumper stickers and coffee mugs.

Vincent told Reuters he had collected over 500 signatures on his petition so far and had sold about 200 pieces of merchandise, with proceeds going to support "the petition drive, myself and the organizers."

His is one of at least two pro-pardon petitions to surface this week on the Internet.

A no-pardon petition urges Schwarzenegger to "ignore other petitions asking for clemency and show the people of California that no one is above the law."

Hilton herself appeared to embrace the clemency effort with a short note posted on what was identified as her personal page on the popular social networking hub MySpace.com: "My friend Joshua started his petition, please help and sihn it (sic). I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!"

Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, who she blamed in court last week for misinforming her about her license status, said the petition drive "appears to be legitimate." But Mintz said he could not immediately verify whether the message attributed to Hilton on MySpace was authentic.

Schwarzenegger's press secretary, Andrew McLear, said the governor had received no formal request to consider a pardon but added, "It would be premature for the governor to become involved in any case until the individual has exhausted their judicial remedies."

Hilton's lawyers filed a notice in court last Friday of their intention to appeal her sentence. She was on probation from a previous traffic offense.

She should go to jail for driving 45 MPH OVER THE LIMIT WITH HER LIGHTS OFF.

WHO CARES IF SHE HAD A LICENSE.

Paris Hilton is sent back to jail

Ms Hilton was released from jail for unspecified health reasons
Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton has been taken screaming from a Los Angeles court after being told to return to jail to serve out her sentence.
The celebrity heiress was ordered to attend the hearing rather than listen to the proceeding by telephone.

Hilton left jail on Thursday, just three days into a 45-day sentence for violating probation on a driving ban.

Her release from detention, on unspecified medical grounds, had sparked widespread criticism.

Hilton attended court to hear the case for her "reassignment" to house arrest.

She arrived in handcuffs and cried throughout the court session.

The judge said that she would have to serve her full 45-day sentence.

"It's not right!" she shouted in response, before calling out to her mother, who was at the court.

Hilton will stay for a few days at a treatment centre at Twin Towers jail in LA for medical and psychiatric examination to determine which jail she will be sent to, sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

LA county sheriff Lee Baca defended his earlier decision to release Hilton on medical grounds, saying "this lady has some severe problems".

She had been held at the Century Regional Detention Centre in Lynwood, California, in a special unit for celebrities, public officials, police officers and other high-profile inmates, and has so far served five days of her sentence.

No details of the medical problem have been given for "privacy reasons".
