I won't find many allies in this, but I think all of the above should be allowed. With the assistance of a standardized channel rating system, consumers would be intelligent enough to make their own decisions about what channels to watch and when.

Oh God I would hate to see the day that that was the case - for example - here is a poke at programs themselves - 'puppets who kill' and 'family guy' - who watches this trash? Adults? Children? It is chilling to see the soul killing civilization that kids are growing up with now - even our generation [1970's] didn't have the 'media pressures' that kids have today - you cannot deny that - so what was wrong in the 1970's - did people not watch TV because it wasn't nasty enough? Of course they watched - they watch no matter what is on the box - so - choice didn't bring things like 'puppets who kill' on the air - it was the systematic downgrading of the standards that we don't really have too many anymore. Just my opinion.
Choice may have an effect on TV broadcasters with more and more TV shows on DVD - that is the way to go - and prices shall come down!

See, I am on FF_Canuck's side with this one.. Its not TV's fault that kids are "corrupted", that is sheer bad parenting and this whole "I don't have to take responsibility for my actions" way of looking at things. Our choices in TV have been strictly reduced over the last decade in particular. I watch Family Guy - I like intelligent adult humour. Of course, children watching it usually have no idea what most of the jokes are.
I am reminded of the Simpsons. I remember as a child the Simpsons was considered a bad show.. not for kids. Then it changed, and everyone was watching in. I remember the day I sat down and watched an episode about a year ago. It was an old episode, and I laughed so hard because I picked up on so much I had missed, or didn't understand as a child.
As a child my favourite movie was robocop. Full of profanity, violence, all the good parts of TV lol. Did it corrupt me? No. . .
Open up the air to real free speech, not this joke we have now.
And I think the change in society brough upon the change you speak of - Because our society isn't as "conservative" as it used to be. (This is one thing that is a real mixed bag of good and bad) |

As I need to head off in a jiff, I don't have time for a long post, but to generalize
less govenrment regulation = more consumer choice = better product.
Thank you, that is all. |

Oh - what is that - 'TV have been strictly reduced over the last decade in particular' what TV is reduced??
Anyhow family guy is bad because it connects sex to 'the baby' - it may seem funny but it isn't...
When I was a kid the some of the 'adult' shows I watched were Taxi and Soap [1978-80] - these were considered to be 'on the edge' at the time - looking at them now one can see that they were quite clean compared to all the sex inuendo today.
Sex and violence - that is the plot and the point on most programs. In 30 years looking at family guy - the sexual inuendo connected to the baby isn't going to look any 'cleaner'...
You're right real TV isn't produced today - there are a few shows like Becker that is no longer produced that was quite funny - still some of the inuendo but not as much. Reality TV has ruined TV as well.
With adverts my biggest peeve is that they are too often selling 'something other than the product'...

Sex and the baby is wrong!??? I don't know man... that seems a little absurd to me. Whats the difference between a baby and an adult suggesting it? None..
See, I think that Family guy is one of those good shows that tests the boundaries of the politically correct. Granted, a lot of the politics behind it I disagree with, but I do think shows like that lighten people up. Its the kind of show that doesn't care who it offends, its all about humour and anyone who can't get that humour can turn it off.
30 years ago those things couldnt have been shown on tv because people would have caused an uproar- not because it wasn't allowed to be on tv. Society didn't want to see it back then, so they didn't. Same reason that men and women used to sleep in seperate beds on TV. Society has changed a lot in this century(I think a lot of it for the better). I think you're unfairly demonizing television. Again, everyone should choose what they want to watch - and if parents don't want their kids watching it, there's always v-chip. Or, digital cable and satellite systems offer parental controls. You start at limiting viewing of certain types and you end at stifling free speech..
Do you also think we should be censoring the internet? TV is absolutely no different than the internet... and I don't think we should stop people from seeing things they want to. |
