I think one thing people often overlook as a strong commodity is Uranium...
We're the largest exporter of Uranium... That combined with oil - we've got a recipe for some serious international clout.
I was going to mention Uranium, but it seems like such a taboo issue in Canada. People seem to think selling it means selling it to make nukes (even though no-one really cared when we basically gave Pakistan and India the tech for nukes). I do agree though, selling those two things to some countries other than the US would probably have much of the world knocking at our door trying to get us to sell it to them.
Now we just need the political will to do so. That, and at the same time preserve (and repair) our relationship with the US. It's a tall order, but I think Harper is up to it. Too bad its not on his agenda so far :P
