Does anyone out there really beleive the CBC anymore?
They ran a phone in "Poll" yesterday but only aired the ones that were anti-Harper.

This they do with my money.

I wonder if they wil release today's poll which shows how Harper would stack up vote -wise against the four frontrunners in the Liberal camp.
He wins hands down against all 4, Rae, Kennedy, Ignatieff and Dion.

Lets bet this gets no attention

Lets not forget who appointed Robert Rabinovitch,

It takes a while to filter out the Liberal Croonies before you get the otherside of the coin as far as news goes.

All I can say is wait for what the CPC is going to do with the CBC now that they're in government.

The Western Standard did a cover piece last month called "Unplugged" which described how the government is currently reviewing the CBC's mandate. From the looks of it, the CBC may actually be turned back into a public broadcaster and forced out of the commerical broadcasting which it has been increasingly wading into.

That means: no HNIC (CBC was going to lose it to TSN irregardless), no shows designed to directly compete with private broadcasters, no competing with private broadcasters over advertising dollars, and strictly Canadian programming (bye-bye Simpsons, Dr. Who, and Coronation Street).

I'm not sure if that'll help with the inherent bias that the CBC displays in their newscasts but I would welcome all those changes if they were to occur.

I'd much rather they just fully privatize it... I don't care what they say as long as my tax dollars don't go to their liberal propoganda.

I think all those Canadians that love the CBC but never watch it would riot if that happened. I do think that if they truely love their "Canadian Programing", then they couldn't argue with the plan stated above to make it a solely Canadian broadcaster.

...

Then in 5 years when there are less that 1% rating (or however tv rating go), nobody will care about the CBC anymore because there won't be any American (or british) programing to watch anymore. It'll be an open door to privatization. At least in my world that's how things would go down.

Yep, that's the way to go.

The only problem would be in Quebec where CBC tv (Radio-Canada) is very popular. I think if the CPC goes for a policy of no competition with private broadcasters, then we'd meet resistance in QC where the CBC not only competes with private stations, but gets higher ratings.

Open up the Canadian broadcasting market completely. Allow people to subscribe directly to US satellite services, and to watch anything they please on cable. Get rid of the stupid restrictions, and watch how quickly the CBC's viewership drops to zero from its present pathetic levels. After that, I doubt that anyone will care whether its privatized, or shut down totally. No one will be watching it anyway.

If the CBC is actually such a beloved icon of Canadianism, then it should be more than capable of surviving as private industry..

Likewise with almost any industry - If it is indeed so popular, then it should be able to survive without government funding.

If S.O.W. is so important to Canadian women, it should be capable of operating as a private industry, or run on donations. The fact that it cannot is a good indication of how much people care about it. (of course, SOW is just a government institution - but the initiatives it funds are mostly charity cases ;) )

I also think the CRTC needs a major revamp. This Canadian content garbage is awful.

Plain and simple state run media should not be allowed to editorialize at all.
I agree as well that if it is so beloved it would be able to survive in the private markets.

Thatís an even bigger issue for me than the CBC. There is no reason why we need a CRTC. They are socialist media control freaks that let Al-Jazera (sp?) in ahead of Fox News. This country needs free speech and freedom of expression, not censorship and social control.

I believe everything CBC tells me; they are the one true double plus good ministers of truth. We have never been at war with Eastasia. We have always been at war with Eurasia.
