A wind turbine has snapped in half and is currently sitting bent over in an open field in Chatham-Kent.

The approximately 160-tonne turbine is located at Drake Road and 16 Line at Raleigh Wind Power facility in Dillon, Ont. The turbine buckled overnight, according to Terraform Power director of investor relations Chad Reed.

"The collapse involved a single turbine at our 52-turbine Raleigh facility," Reed told CTV News. "TerraForm has not experienced any similar issues at any of its wind facilities globally."

John Norton, the general manager of community development with the municipality, says the fire chief was on scene, as well as local police and crews from Terraform Power.

Norton adds they are all investigating to see how the turbine collapsed in half.

So ... they sent the fire chief out to figure it out. Why? Perhaps the wind blew it down? Perhaps they need more regulation? Building inspectors?[/i]

The image of the turbine actually shocked me.

How does that even happen?

Can you imagine the stresses? That pole is about 180 feet high. On top of that is a generator that is almost as big as a 50' trailer you see on highways. It weighs tons, and is balanced on that pole, attached to three wind vanes that are around 80 feet long! The winds that blow at that height are regularly 30 to 50 km/hour and can be turbulent. It causes the blades to rotate every ten seconds. And every once in a while, the winds far exceed that.

These things are rooted 30 or 40 feet into the ground in concrete. Now bring in the designers, for whom the task is to build this thing with as little labour and materials as possible.

In California, if the maintenance stops, the turbine soon stops, and they fall over a while after that.
