This is a little rich. We amp up our military spending to $30 billion a year -- over a decade --- and we that will make us 'strong and free' -- able to compel the respect of the Russians and the Chinese?

A country like Canada has to be able to put at least one division on the ground, and keep it there, to be a military player. From what I can see, it's all we can do to keep 2200 in active duty in actual low-level combat situations.

It brings us closer to our NATO commitment;

But before we get too excited there are a few things to consider;
For nearly a decade we have been discussing adding 65x fighter jets to replace our aging CF-18s.

The thing is we have 103 CF-18's in service and originally purchased 138 to replace the Starfighter, Voodoo's, and Freedom Fighters in the early 1980s.

The gap between 65 and 103 is significant given how many times the current fleets is deployed there was always going to be a "second purchase" of aircraft to reduce that gap.

Now the number is up to 88 aircraft;
Given that we already made a commitment to purchase 18x Super Hornets @ 100m USD per plane (making up over 2b CDN of the new funding)

Its not that this spending is unexpected or really that far out of the box;
Its simply announcing what most folks knew anyway and that is simply that you can't replace over 100x Fighter Jets with 65.
