( looks like the pc's in Newfoundland and Labrador are looking for a new leader , although considering the liberal governments lack of popularity after massive tax hikes , there should be some interest in this job )
Opposition leader in Newfoundland and Labrador plans to resign: party president
By The Canadian Press — Oct 11 2016
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador says Paul Davis has indicated his intention to resign as party leader.
Party president Mark Whiffen says the former premier has written to him to ask that a leadership convention be held to elect a new party leader.
Whiffen says Davis is not planning to resign immediately and will stay on as leader until the convention is held.
Whiffen says the party's executive committee will begin discussions immediately and continue them during the party's annual general meeting in Gander later this month.
Davis was elected as party leader just 13 months before the election last November that ended 12 years of Tory rule in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dwight Ball led the Liberals to a majority government, capitalizing on tanking Tory popularity amid failing provincial finances.
Former Premier Paul Davis is stepping down as opposition leader. Less than two weeks before he possibly had to face a leadership review at the PC's AGM in Gander, Davis says he wanted to step down and avoid any further division within the party.
Davis told reporters today that he felt confident he would survive a leadership review, but wanted his party to focus more on problems facing the people of the province and not internal leadership issues.
Davis told the party he will stay on until a new leader is chosen and will continue as MHA for Topsail.
Davis lost the election last fall to Dwight Ball and the Liberals. A year earlier, he won the leadership by the narrowest of margins in a contentious leadership convention. He candidly said today he was not looking forward to the prospect of another leadership so soon, but ultimately wanted to do what is best for the party.
The party has stated it is now beginning the process of putting together a leadership convention committee.
Liberals, NDP React to Announcement
Premier Dwight Ball extends his thank you to Paul Davis for his years of service as Premier and in his current role as Opposition leader. Ball says he'll reach out to Davis in the coming days to express his thanks. Ball particularly thanked Davis' family for their supporting Davis during his time as leader of the PC party.
Meanwhile, NDP leader Earle McCurdy also took time to thank Davis for his service. McCurdy says Davis is a formidable opponent. He says even though their parties represent different views, McCurdy appreciates Davis' talents and strengths. McCurdy says he's glad to see Davis continuing his role as MHA for Topsail-Paradise
