So, what is your opinion? Our last 4 PMs. not counting the 3 month wonders like Campbell, Turner, and Clark, all had connections to Power corp and the Desmarais family. Do these guys own Canada, or do they just think they do?

Bob Rae has a brother at Power, Iggy also has connections, and they are considered front runners. Is MacKay still dating a Desmarais? Will he be the next leader? Will Batman escape this sticky situation?

When I heard all the conspiracy theories surrounding Power Corp put out by us righties, it reminds me that the tinfoil hat crowd still has more than a few conservatives left in its ranks.

The connections are a matter of public record. The only question really is whether Power corp has undue influence or not. The Western Standard had a good summary of all the connection a year or two ago.

You're implying some sorta secret cabal located at Power Corp HQ is running the country. That I don't agree with. A lotta people with the right connections that's all, but nothing more.

Canada is a pretty small pond. It would be like pointing out the connections involved in a Governor's race in the US somewhere. This is also why anyone with even a relatively modest amount of fame or money is treated as a superstar by the elites and journalists here. Good examples are Belinda Stronach and Michael Ignatieff. It is fairly easy to go from one of a large group of technocrats to being some sort of savant just by entering Canadian politics, it seems.

Now if the US had a Power Corp-like situation then there'd be something fishy, but in Canada it's just a conwinkydink

It's more than just about being a small pond. It goes back to the days of the Family Compact and the Chateau Clique, when the British territories in North America were run by a small group of people essentially for their own benefit.

It's not that overt any more, but a sort of unholy alliance between some Canadian businesses and the government, has always been there. It's not just Power Corp. Have you seen how many ex-politicians have been working for Magna, from both major political parties? That's why the Liberals were so surprised at the uproar over the sponsorship scandal, and the other forms of theft and waste they engaged in. They considered it to almost be their right to do what they did, because everyone before them has always done the same thing.

There is one big fly in the ointment for the inheritors of the Family Compact. Stephen Harper. He is an ordinary guy who's not one of them, and doesn't seem to want to be. He is intelligent, principled, and from what I can see, incorruptible. That is the real reason why they find him scary. They see their gravy train coming to a grinding halt, if he hangs around.

The business of government is business.
