David Cameron has returned to Downing Street with the Tories having defied polls and won the general election.

The Conservatives made gains in England and Wales and are forecast by the BBC to secure 331 seats in the Commons, giving them a slender majority.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said he would stand down on Friday, saying his party must "rebuild" with a new leader.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has also said he will quit, with his party set to be reduced from 57 to eight MPs.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage is also quitting after he failed to win Thanet South, losing by nearly 2,800 votes to the Conservatives.

The Tories played this campaign very well.

They made the argument to the voters that the only way the Labour party would be able to secure power would be via a deal with the SNP.

The questions for weeks were simply;

What will Labour need to promise to SNP for their support? How much would it cost the taxpayers? and should the SNP weld so much power over the whole of the UK?

When all was said and done the voters handed the Tories a majority and the SNP is the second largest opposition party.

the election over there was interesting not sure how much it relates to Canada . but labour failed to return to power much like the liberals failed to return to power in 2008 and 2011 elections after they had though it be an easy task to do so .
it shows that a strong conservative government can get re elected even if its in an area that has had other parties previously in power for long periods . voters choose a popular tory pm over a younger labour leader .

its also odd that Scotland is now almost entirely represented by a semi separatist party even though it voted against separating . and 3 main parties have no mp's there and no tory mp's in government from Scotland .
