Quote:
Ontario's Progressive Conservatives are set to back an NDP bill that would nix the HST on home heating bills, an idea both parties floated during the provincial election.

PC Leader Tim Hudak and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath met Wednesday to discuss the private member's bill. Although neither denied their distance on the political spectrum, both said they could agree on reducing the cost of living for Ontarians.

"Obviously there's a lot of areas that the NDP and PCs will never agree on, but good meeting, very productive," Hudak told reporters afterwards.

"Are we going to support that? Page five of our platform — of course," he said of the bill.

He qualified that his party would like to go even further and remove the debt retirement charge on home hydro bills, but that removing the HST is still “a step in the right direction.”

Horwath said the NDP introduced “a very straightforward bill on purpose” and that she hopes productive conversations between party leaders become the norm.

"There was one of those places of convergence in terms of our platform and theirs,” she said, “and so I look forward to the debating of that bill."

Sounds good especially if they can stop McGuinty from putting even more taxes onto Ontarians.

Its a nice idea;
However I get the feeling that its a Partisan tact;

The Liberals can control the final reading of the bill and assure it never reaches that point and the Tories and NDP both know this.

It appears this will be largely a paper victory;
Its an important issue, however I don't think that either the NDP or PCs want to go to the polls over this and at this point the only way to get this passed would be to threaten the Liberals with a Confidence motion, which I consider to be unlikely.

The PCs got rid of it last year in Newfoundland and Labrador after the NDP started pushing for it.
