Too much negativity can backfire especially if there is nothing positive to counterbalance it.

But then again it's a ad that speaks the truth on Dion, the Guy is a puppet and from Quebec Liberal elite.

I don't think that these ads are anywhere close to too negative. They were done in pretty good taste.

The public thinks "THATS UNFAIR" according to one published poll. I don't know why they don't think it's fair. Probably because of the Liberals' friends in the media.

Even if the public thinks that the ads are unfair, I don't think that will affect the CPC negatively. The ads may be unfair, but people will still think about them. Ultimately, I do not think that people will want to vote for someone that they feel sorry for. The ads may be unfair, but Dion still doesn't look good.

The ads displayed the Liberals being negative about themselves...

"We didn't get it done"

Was said by Ken Dryden NOT a Conservative. If they were negative then blame the Liberals.

The truth is that it's been proven time and again that negative advertising works. And that's talking about "real" attack ads. These ads barely rate as such. Simply playing back your opponents own words is as smart a way to go as it gets. The only ones upset about them are the Libs because the truth hurts and screaming "attack ads, attacks ads" with self-righteous indignation is their only (lame) counter response.

Do you have any proof these ads have backfired? If it's so clear, I'm sure you'll have no problen substantiating as much.

In other words, you have no proof but the media told you "Harper screwed up!" or something similar and you believed it.

Besides... which polls? Any poll asking about leadership automatically pins Harper as being the first choice. Any poll asking who you would vote for if it was an election tomorrow is meaningless since it is NOT an election tomorrow.

Polls are a snapshot and we all know how easy it is to manipulate a snapshot. Pick the right question and you can make people agree to almost anything at all. Not that media would ever manipulate polls...

Government-by-poll is a Liberal way of doing business. Conservatives are supposed to be principled, doing the right things for the right reasons and be damned to the polls.

Well Mac perhaps the biggest reason that Canadians don't like attack adds is that reminds you of lawyers battling it out. With lawyers it is take no prisioners and any thing is fair nothing is too low for them. Where as your average Canadians likes to consider themselfs as honest and fair people.

Listen to Kinsella on attack ads. They have to be truthful. If the attack is true, or if people suspect it is probably true, and people can plainly see that, then the attack ad is effective. If you are simply calling someone a smelly hippie, or reptilian alien kitten eater, you get your self in trouble.
