Public grief over Layton puts NDP even with Tories in poll
http://www.theglobeandmail.com.....le2148563/
That is just stupid! I heard just days ago that there was a poll done and the NDP 'support' had dropped significantly.
The NDP are politicizing their leader's death and that is just pathetic. It also invites legitimate criticisms from others not so foolishly buying into this crap.
When someone famous, who is constantly seen by the masses, dies, it simultaneously focuses more attention of the collective AND the individual on the topic of death and how fast time goes by in life.
The popularity gained is only reflective sentimentality - it's temporary and if accurate this poll is hardly representative. Sentimentality is no way to make an electoral choice.
The current ruling Party has a long tenure ahead.... |

I fully expected this;
While many folks disagreed with Layton, it was hard not to respect his commitment to public service. For me my short love affair ended about two minutes into Stephen Lewis eulogy, however for many other Canadians it will take time.
I don't blame the NDP for politicizing their leaders passing, and I honestly believe Jack didn't mind either.
The NDP finds itself about to enter a leadership debate that will pit Quebec Vs. the rest of Canada and what makes matters worse is that BC is the province with the most NDP memberships, and will have a lot of sway when a new leader is chosen.
The primary factors aside;
Lets not forget this is a Harris-Decima poll.
These are the same folks that had the Tories at 35/36% the day before the election. |

| Let's not forget that the next poll that matters isn't for four years and by then Layton will be a distant memory. It's been so long since we last had a majority government that the pollsters have forgotten that polls are almost worthless during their terms. |

Yep;
You are of course correct.
We are in a period right now where many in the media and many just in general almost feel its in poor taste to discuss the NDP in the same manner we did a month ago..
They are a party with two camps, who had a leader who had a great two weeks on the campaign trail who saw his national support start to slip before he stepped aside.
They are the same party with an interim leader who is less then a month removed from active membership in Québec Solidaire,
And we are yet to see what other fun and exciting skeletons the rest of the Quebec caucus is yet to reveal. |
