Quote:
British lawmakers staged an emergency House of Commons debate Wednesday to vent their outrage over a widening tabloid phone hacking scandal that allegedly targeted missing schoolgirls and the families of London terror victims in addition to celebrities and royals.

News International, the British linchpin of Rupert Murdoch's global media empire, was under intense pressure following reports that its News of the World tabloid had hacked into the cellphone of missing 13-year-old Milly Dowler in 2002, deleting messages and giving her parents and police false hope that the girl was still alive.

Milly had been abducted and murdered, and the search for her transfixed Britain at the time.

Think about it -- it's bad enough to 'eavesdrop' on your email and cellphone messages, but to delete messages is a step beyond even that. It could have tragic consequences.

The News of the World is famous for paying 'sources' for information about celebrities' sex lives and drug problems -- including, even, the Royals. This goes further, beause it could interfere with a police investigatgion.

Quote:
New allegations emerged Wednesday that Glenn Mulcaire, a private detective employed by News of the World, had obtained telephone numbers of relatives of some of the 52 people killed in the 2005 terrorist attack on London's transit system. It was unclear whether any of those phone had been hacked.

British media also reported that the parents of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, schoolgirls murdered in a sensational 2002 case, had been informed by police that they were investigating whether the News of the World also hacked their telephones.

The British Broadcasting Corp. also reported that the tabloid had handed over evidence that it had illegally paid police officers for information.

Mulcaire and former News of the World reporter Clive Goodman have already served prison sentences for hacking into phones of royal officials. Mulcaire issued an apology on Tuesday to anyone who had been hurt by his actions, but said there was no intention to interfere with a police investigation.

In my opinion, this is just the tip of an iceberg. So far, not a whiff of it appears in the Canadian media. (Not that anyone would ever accuse them of aggressively rooting out the Truth ...)

Now it appears to be getting close to PM Cameron, but Brooks stays on.

Oh that's rich.. Red Ed Milliband and co. as privacy advocates. This sort of thing is bound to happen when everyone is acclimatized to being video surveiled 300x daily, has a facebook profile and needs government approval to unzip their pants. I hope Cameron jujutsu's this into an opportunity to broadly roll back the surveillance state.

No wonder Miliband is getting scared seems Labour may have been up to their necks in it.

This story is set to get much larger. Apparently the NOTW tried to hire a New York private detective to supply cell numbers of 911 victims so their phones could be hacked. Americans take 911 very very seriously. If these allegations are true, then Newscorp can expect to see a shit storm of epic proportions. When those arrested in the U.K. start making deals and naming names to avoid jail time you can expect this thing to go nuclear.

I've never heard of anything like this. It's like something out of a Hollywood movie.

If Black is in jail seems like Murdoch and Brooks should be alongside him.
