It's official, Ed Stelmach won't run in the next Alberta provincial election, which he was originally targeting for March 2012.

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election.

“I have determined that after 25 years of public service, I am not prepared to serve another full term as Premier,” he said at a news conference at the Alberta legislature.

Mr. Stelmach said he will step down and a leadership race will happen before the election, no later than March, 2013.

Quote:
The mild-mannered Premier has had a tumultuous year, however, running afoul of public opinion in the critical fields of finance, health care and energy.

He has also faced pressure over his leadership as a new party on the right, the Wildrose Alliance, has surged in the polls.

On Tuesday, Mr. Stelmach warned of a "profound danger" that the next election campaign will be fought on personality, not policy, and through negative attacks.

"The danger is that it could allow for an extreme-right party to disguise itself as a moderate party by focusing on personality – on me, personally," he said.

"Albertans deserve to have better level of public debate on our policy options."

In a statement, Mr. Stelmach said he has no doubt his decision would come as a shock to many.

Depending on who the Alberta PC's elect (Ted Morton anyone?) it could make the next election in Alberta very interesting.

I think he sees the writing on the wall. The only Conservative government in the country to spend more than the feds, was the Alberta ones. That deficit crap does not fly too well in Alberta, I expect the Wildrose will get a chance to become corrupt and addicted to power pretty soon.

this is surprising but at same time not surprising . as he clearly was no longer as popular as he was before and most definity was going to lose seats next election .
i wonder if some in the parties backrooms forced him out or if he voluntered to leave ?

it be interesting to see what happens to the alberta pc's after this and who is now interested in leading them .

Stelmach was nothing more then the Alberta PC's version of Stephane Dion.
The universal second choice.

Dinning supporters hated Morton, and Morton supporters hated Dinning.
In the end they got the guy that no one wanted and it destroyed the party.
