The federal liberal candidate in parry sound -muskoka ( tony clements riding ) has found an unusal way to run ads without spending riding association money , he's taken out front page ads advertsiing his lawyers practice that look like election ads but don't mention anywhere he is the liberal candidate for the riding . they include a picture of him and his last name in red . they only started recently from what i hear and he did not run these kinds of ads before he was a nominated candidate or advertise his legal practise in any way previously so they are obvviously being run he is a nominated candidate . i don't understand how this kind of stuff is legal under the election laws .

I actually think it's pretty clever, regardless of what I think of his party of choice. Really, I can't conceive of a way to write the elections act to prevent this that wouldn't do more harm than good in restricting advertising and freedom of expression.

What do you do about candidates who are realtors, or car salesman? Media figures? And incumbent politicians have a multitude of nonpartisan reasons to distribute literature and run ads during their work as MPs. I don't think there's any need for more regulation here.

The Liberal candidate won't win so his ads I assume are to increase his vote share so he at least gets 10% to get his canpaign rebate and deposit back. Maybe he is planning for running at the municipal level in the future.
