An interesting study performed in the United States, that I found linked at Ace of Spades. While orginally intended to determine the link between college education and economic enlightment (as measured by basic questions of economics), it produced startling results when the responses were indexed by ideaology...
In the 8 questions considered, respondents were asked to agree or disagree with statements like "Rent control leads to housing shortages" (True) or "A company with the largest market share is a monopoly" (False).
People who identified as 'Progressive / Very Liberal', or 'Liberal' answered incorrectly a stunning 61.7% of the time, in contrast to self-identified conservatives and libertarians, who only answered incorrectly 18% of the time.
People who voted for Obama averaged 57.5% incorrect answers, while those who voted for McCain averaged 20% incorrect answers.
Unsurprisingly the results tracked with party affiliation were similar - registered Democrats and Greens would have 'failed' the survey, registered Republicans and Libertarians would have earned an average of an 'A'.
There were some interesting 'random' results as well. Protestants were the religious group with the best scores. Church goers, NASCAR Fans, and Walmart shoppers were much more economically enlightened than the average respondent.
