'You have to have loyalty' in politics, says outgoing Quebec Senator Prud'homme
Outgoing Independent Quebec Sen. Marcel Prud'homme talks about his 45 years in federal politics. Partisanship is up, he says, and free-thinking and camaraderie are down.

Independent Quebec Senator Marcel Prud'homme, who turns 75 and retires on Nov. 30 after 45 years in federal politics, says the House needs greater reform than the Senate, most MPs are trained seals, and loyalty to the leader is the most important virtue in politics. He has a lot to say.

"You have to have loyalty," he told The Hill Times last week. "I'm sad because I've seen so many fights. I've seen the end of Mr. Trudeau and...

Sooner rather than later, I hope...

As far as MPs being 'trained seals', that's a pretty interesting observation from a Senator. I'd love to see how many times this supposed independent didn't toe the party line...

My guess is the next appointments will be made in January 2010 when there will be five vacancies (correct me if Iím wrong): 2 in Ontario (both GTA region), 1 in Quebec, 1 in New Brunswich and 1 in Newfoundland.

My picks:
ON: Raminder Gill

ON: Someone from the GTA who is not a career politician

QC: Michael Fortier (while many of you may disagree, I think his not winning a seat was a huge loss to the party)

NB: Jeannot Volpe

Nfld: I heard of an ex-MHA who I think left the Nfld PC because they didnít like Dannyís dictatorial style and was touted as a possible pick. I canít remember their name though (or if they were female or male).

I heard the same thing. It was a male. I think he was in cabinet and refused to run again.
