PostPosted: Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:50 pm    Post subject: Information on H1N1 vaccine Reply with quote

Dear all, this is a public service announcement.

There are a number of lies and scaremongering about the H1N1 vaccine being used in Canada, Arepanrix. A batch of the vaccine was recently pulled because there were 4 associated severe adverse reactions. I came across this website (http://preventdisease.com/news/09/102609_Alert_Canadians_Arepanrix_vaccine_analysis.shtml) which is sloppy. It degenerates into conspiracy theories about global birth control and in the “books” section you are treated to literature about “soul-awakening” and “past life” influences.

This ticks me, big time. So I did a little research and here’s my paper on the topic. Published in Blogging Tories, November 24 2009.

Now, let's analyze the claims bit by bit.

Claim 1: The vaccine is not safe because it hasn't been tested.

Veridicity: Dubious.

Analysis: The methodology for preparing it is the same as for seasonal flu vaccines. The virus is propagated in eggs and knocked out. Long-term clinical trials have not been done, but judging from previous seasonal flu vaccine experience there is no apparent reason for thinking this vaccine is any more or less dangerous.

Put in perspective: If you mix the same ingredients and bake for the same time, your cake usually comes out the same every time.

Claim 2: The vaccine contains formaldehyde and sodium deoxycholate

Veridicity: Partly true.

Analysis:These compounds are used in the production process but are purified out before the product is formulated. Trace amounts may remain post-purification (1), just like trace amounts of almost anything can be found in the food you eat, including pesticides or traces of machine oil from the farmer's tractor.

Put into perspective: there is a maximum of 25 micrograms of formaldehyde per dose. That's about the same amount you get from smoking ONE bog-standard cigarette (2). I was unable to find information on sodium deoxycholate except that it is a detergent used, logically, to destroy the virus coat and split it up into its components. Its mother acid, deoxycholic acid, is a component of human bile and is useful for absorbing fats.

Claim 3: Squalene, the vaccine's adjuvant, is responsible for Gulf War Syndrome, causes arthritis and nerve damage.

Veridicity: False.

Analysis:Squalene is naturally present in humans (3) and is a key component of cholesterol synthesis. The study linking squalene to GWS has been debunked because of sloppy methods (4,5). Squalene has been used as an adjuvant in Germany and Italy for years without the purported adverse effects.

There is a study linking squalene to arthritis in rats (6), but they injected 300 microlitres (300 milligrams) into what can be described as a maximum 500 gram rat, resulting in a total body squalene count (w/w) of 0.6 g/kg body weight. If we assume rats have the same proportion of blood to body weight as humans (4 litres per 70 kg) that would mean 10mg squalene per gram of blood.

The Polish study linking squalene to nerve injury involved administering 4 daily squalene doses of 20 g/kg body weight (7).

Squalene is naturally present in human blood at 290 micrograms per litre (1.16 milligrams in 4 litres). The vaccine contains 10.69 mg (very large compared to body's normal supply). After vaccination you will have a squalene count of 0.00017 g/kg body weight and 0.003mg squalene per gram of blood.

Put into perspective: Your body's squalene content will be 1/3000th of the one supposed to cause arthritis in rats and 2/1000000th of the one that is purported to cause nerve damage. Too much of a good thing is still too much, it doesn't mean it's a bad thing altogether. Too much booze will kill you too.

Claim 4: Polysorbate 80 causes anaphylactic shocks.

Veridicity: True, just as mosquito bites, nuts or pollen

Analysis:The study cited by the scaremongering website is a study by Coors et al in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (8). A patient had an anaphylactic shock when given a drip. The team wanted to know if Tween 80 (another name for polysorbate 80) had caused it. They administered doses of Tween 80 and the culprit vitamin product and she had a reaction, while the control group did not exhibit any symptoms whatsoever.

Put into perspective:If you are violently allergic to something, exposure to it can cause an anaphylactic shock. Tween 80 is no different. It is ubiquitous in our medical products and is certainly not good for you. But it is no killer.

Claim 5: Polysorbate 8 causes infertility

Veridicity: False

Analysis: The Polish study cited to “prove” this (9) used around 10mg Tween 80 per rat, giving a count of 0.02 grams Tween 80 per kg body weight. This calculation assumes the rats were fully developed at 500g, which is highly unlikely. Multiply the real proportion accordingly. The rats were DEVELOPING rather than developed, which is also a very important distinction. Tween 80 also does not manifest any of these effects when given orally (10). The vaccine contains 4.86mg Tween 80. Your count will be 0.00007 g/kg.

Put in perspective: You eat it, are medicated with it and put it on your face all the time. You still have children. ‘Nuf said.

Claim 6: The vaccine’s Thiomersal (thimerosal) content is toxic.

Veridicity: Crassly false.

Analysis: Thiomersal disintegrates into ethylmercury (which is excreted) rather than its cousin methylmercury (which accumulates in the body). Some of the most stringent methylmercury exposure standards want a maximum exposure of 0.1 micrograms per kilo of body weight per day (11). A 70-kilo person is thus “cleared” for a 7 microgram per day exposure. Most fisheries require a maximum mercury content of 0.3-1 part per million for the fish to be suitable for human consumption (12). That means 1 milligram Hg per kilo of fish. Furthermore, adverse effects of mercury exposure are supposed to manifest at 500 ppb in humans. I’d assume that means 500 micrograms per kilo body weight.

Put in perspective: The vaccine contains either 5 micrograms Thiomersal or 2.5 micrograms mercury. When you get vaccinated you get no more mercury than you’d be expected to be exposed to daily, 1/1000th of the dose supposed to make you notice something’s wrong and about the same amount you’d get by eating 5 grams of safe fish. Now go eat some sushi!

Conclusion: The vaccine is safe unless you are allergic to any of its components or very unlucky. Batch variability with an inconsistent production method such as eggs should be expected, but the procedure is generally safe. Scaremongers usually ignore the scale or scope of the studies involved, or deliberately misinterpret them.

In about five years we will have the results of the long term clinical studies. In the meantime be safe and trust the advice of your doctor. If in doubt, please do ask anyone with access to the full content of scientific journals or at least go to your local library and do it yourself.

If you are worried about formaldehyde, then you should also stop drinking. The human body metabolizes alcohol into formaldehyde, which is what kills the liver of serious drinkers.

I already had the shot, it hurts the arm upto a few days. Maybe it's that tracking device that the UN installs on your bone.

For me it was almost 5 days, so I might actually believe that one!

This showed up on the BT blog roll today:

Severe H1N1 Vaccine Allergic Reactions
Apparently there has been an unusual number of severe allergic reactions to the swine flu vaccine in Canada. This reported by the WHO (World Health Organization ). Vancouver Sun

Makes ya kinda think twice about getting poked in the arm doesn't it?

Have a look at this video that was sent to me. It's about a young women who got a shot and then suffered a severe reaction.

Wanna take a chance? Not me, thank you.

The video she links to has all, and more, of those claims you disprove. The video also includes the case of that woman who supposedly got a vaccine and wasn't able to walk properly afterwards.

I pointed out to her that the woman who couldn't walk has recently announced that she's been cured....by urine injection therapy.

I heard somewhere that it was actually a seasonal flu shot that they say triggered her reaction. I didn't heard that she was cured. If so, great!

The flu virus is vicious in that it can affect many kinds of body cells, including nerves. Catching a particularly unlucky seasonal flu could leave you paralyzed, potentially.

Soreness is reported in about 98% of patients. Rather than being a "side" effect it's just part of the vaccine. Blipping annoying.

To put things into perspective, however, let's consider some data. There have been about 6 confirmed Guillain-Barré syndrome cases following inoculation with the H1N1 vaccine. About 60 million people have taken the vaccine. From what I heard this is less than what the company and the regulators expected.

With every pharmaceutical product there is an associated risk of allergy, autoimmune reaction or just plain freak accidents. I can hardly come up with any product that is 100% safe, even good old aspirin has risks.

One's not "taking chances" with the vaccine, since not being vaccinated puts you at risk of contracting the disease anyway. In that case you're taking a chance with an active virus which could have mutated in the meantime and is not accountable to regulators, laws or the wider body of public opinion.

If you do not get vaccinated, furthermore, you become a potential reassortment vessel. There's more than one flu virus out there and they can exchange genetic material if they both infect a person at the same time. This is a faster and deadlier mutation pathway: two human-infecting strains sharing intelligence. If you work in contact with birds or are expected to come in contact with them please do get the shot. A reassortment between an avian strain (H5N1 kills over 60% of those it infected so far) and the virulent H1N1 would make the Spanish flu look tame.
