I view China as an ideological foe but an excellent financial trading partner.
These two roles don't have to conflict with each other.
Basically, I agree with 905 Tory - promote democracy and human rights to the Chinese, but realize that we obviously have no means of forcing the Chinese to go along with our democratic values, and at the same time engage in beneficial trade with the Chinese.
One thing that I would add is that we have to be diligent in preventing the Chinese government from unduly influencing our country. I do recall hearing reports on the news on how China has made some attempts to make Canada more like them, and that would be horrible, I think. |

Whats really scary is that China owns much of the U.S. debt :!: However, as the Chinese middle class increases in size, will demand more & more freedoms to a point where they will eventually become a true democratic nation.
The U.S. is in decline so its best to look elsewhere to sell our goods & services, particuarly countries like China & India who seem to have fairly weathered the 'made in the U.S.' world wide financial meltdown. |
