Thus, the core values of the Jewish religion are expressed near the opening of a Yom Kippur service. The concept is that going to services only heals the relationship with G-d. True atonement is to the community and to the people you've dealt with, perhaps a bit sharply, during the year.

The hard part is facing those people, and making amends. That is never easy.

With that, have an easy fast, and a healthy year.

Yet, it is not possible to achieve further enlightenment without taking responsibility and making amends for your transgressions. Not, it's not easy but we're better for it since we can then heal...

Maybe I should give up on being a non-practicing Presbyterian and visit the synagogue...?

Have an easy fast and a healthy year!

Thanks.

But keep in mind it's the duty of every Jew to discourage a potential convert.

That being said, you're always welcome (except that Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur are ticketed events) to come to a synagogue. We're not like some religions where strangers are beaten up, blown up or killed.

I consider myself officially discouraged. :)

I was supposed to encourage you to become officially bi-lingual, not officially discouraged.

Theoretically, I am (was?) bilingual but I haven't spoken enough French in the past 20 years to maintain my fluency. Now I'm living & working in Ottawa, my fluency might come back if I felt so inclined. If I were upwardly mobile, bilinguality would be considered an asset. Meh...
